I read your book "Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance" 41 years ago.
You touched my life then and I still think of you when I try to do quality work, be it at my job or fixing on a tractor.
Godspeed to you buddy.

"It is not good to talk about Zen because Zen is nothingness," he told The Guardian in 2006. "If you talk about it you are always lying, and if you don't talk about it no one knows it is there."

Started riding motorcycles (or at least road bikes) midway through college and read the book a year or so later as part of a college course. Enjoyed it immensely and still own my copy from then--might have to re-read it in his memory, as it's been a few years since I have, and it's most definitely a book that can be, and indeed needs to be, read more than once.

I have started it twice and not got through it once yet. I have been meaning to see if I can make it all the way through, maybe it will be my next book, it is around here somewhere. I am a reader, but for some reason I get about half way through this one and stop? As I remember it he could appreciate the mechanic or machinist unlike some "educated" folks.

Read it twice, Pirsig's passing may be a good excuse to read it again.

I suppose the title was inspired by "Zen in the Art of Archery", written a generation earlier. The book is downloadable, I think I will re-read that one too.

Pirsig's journey continues, perhaps.

That is it ! I have probably read 100 library books since that post. Just read John Henry { he was a real person] and now "The Killing of Crazy Horse".

Read your post from a year ago. Very interesting. It generated replies from some new (new to me)names.
Glad to know there are so many readers on the forum. Though many are infrequent posters.

Thanks for sharing. Have you read "Coming Apart" by Charles Murray? For an old guy like me it adds facts and data to much of what I have watched happen over the years. Murray is very controversial for some of his findings in earlier books.
