hello all
this is my first posting having joined only recently.
i have a MF 165 ,1978 with the perkins A4 212 engine.the tractor is in the vale of glamorgan near barry
i have a few problems with it which are beyond my ability to repair;
clutch needs adjusting or replacing
brakes need adjusting or replacing
fuel and temperature gauge don't work.gauges new but wires missing.
after 10 to 15 mins use with PTO running flail mower engine dies,i suspect no fuel getting through, after 15 mins starts and runs 10 mins before cutting out again. this also happened on a road trip - managed 1mile before cutting out.glass bowl is full so maybe restricted flow somewhere.
i am looking for an experience fitter to give it the once over and sort out these issues
anyone out there who can do these works
thanks for looking
steve

(quoted from post at 04:04:46 04/24/17) I get the feeling that you are a long way from southern Indiana, or I would help you.

Ray,afternoon[it is here anyway]

A couple of smart guys on this forum live in Wales. I am sure they will tune in and
lend their expertise.
Good tractor, sounds like a simple maintenance/repair is in order. Ben

I had a wd45 allis that would do the same thing. Some one had changed it to 12 volt but did not change the coil, installed a resister and no more problems. Could be your problem too don't know much about masseys. Gordy in Mn

I am going to go out on a limb here and guess your tractor is a diesel , coming
from the UK. I ran MF 165 diesel tractors as a youth , and I found that if the
tractor has the spin on fuel filter , it is not a big deal to swap the filter and
bleed the system , but, if you have the CAV, style filter ,whole new story. The
filter assembly has to be leak proof , if it can suck any air ,it will, and the
tractor will die after about the period of time you have stated. You can get an
adapter kit , so that you can go to a spin on style fuel filter for the 165 Massey.
It will cut your frustration level.
If the clutch is slipping , it is probably more than just an adjustment to cure.
I would guess your tractor will need to be split, and it would be guess work to say
what you might find.May need a new clutch assembly , and throw out barring , and
the fly wheel may need to be turned . Always a good idea to check the ring gear for
wear, and perhaps turn it around , so the starter can wear the other side of the
teeth. While your tractor is split , it is a good time to check to see if the main
barring seal is leaking oil, and it should be changed if it is. A leaking seal on
the main barring , could leak enough oil into the clutch to cause it to slip.
So , as I stated , pure guess work until the tractor is split. Best of luck !

I also get the feeling that the idea of making these repairs himself is overwhelming, and that he is looking to hire a mechanic.

For an experienced wrench-turner, these are all fairly simple repairs, but for someone who just sits in the seat, they can seem impossible.

Not being anywhere near that geographical area, my recommendation is to check with nearby equipment dealerships, and ask if they know of any independent mechanics around who may be able to work on your tractor. Explain that the tractor is old and they're probably wouldn't want to waste their time with it, so they know they're not losing business.

Do you have a phone directory similar to what we call "Yellow Pages" in the US? It is a classified directory of services. While it's pretty much obsolete, many old school businesses still advertise in them, and a place that works on old tractors like that is an old school business.

I am not picking faults but are you sure it is a 1978 MF165 as the range was changed to 565-575-590 in 1976 by the way I am in Mid best regards

(quoted from post at 17:45:08 04/24/17) Seems to me they went to 265 in 1975...."2" on all models. Prolly same tractor w/newer sheet metal

hi all
thanks for your responses
you are correct it is not 1978 but registered on 6-8-1972,it is a 165 with multi power
the clutch is not slipping but i cannot depress the clutch far enough to engage the pto with the engine running.i do not know if clutch adjustment has already been undertaken and there is no adjustment left thus requiring a new clutch
the repairs are totally beyond my abilities,i love to use the tractor on a sunday morning once a month or so and can't stop smiling or singing whilst going through the brambles and nettles with the flail mower.
hoping a top quality mechanic/fitter with experience of old tractors is out there somewhere in the vale of glamorgan able and willing to do the work for suitable remuneration
thanks all
steve
