What makes pressure washer oil so expensive?

From what I know from running a base lube oil unit for 12 years the less volume that is in the market place drives the price up. Yes, I know that is 100% opposite from how economics work. The catch is that there are only a few refineries that make the base oil that gets an additive package to make the finished product. That allows the marketing dept. to pretty much set the price for the base oil. Now to really make your blood boil, not on purpose mind you, the stream that goes into that particular product is a by-product of my process, it just "happens" when we make the heavier stream that is used for motor oil blending. The profit margin is usually twice what the heavy stream is, but at a lot less volume. If there is no buyers for the light stream we can either stop making it all together or send it into the diesel system. I have to pay retail too, please don't shoot the messenger...

Simple economics; take kerosene for example. Before electricity and gas engines were abundant kerosene was produced in the billions of gallons and gasoline was actually an almost useless by-product of it. Kero was cheaper than gas, (according to my dad) and more efficient in tractors.

Then gas motors came on, and houses got electricity. The demand for kero dropped, while gas skyrocketed. Refineries almost stopped making Kero, so the price went high. Today, gas is $2.03 a gallon, kerosene $10.98 at Lowes for 1 gallon.

The solution..buy more pressure washer oil and the price will come down!! LOL.

Well, almost, Jet A is pretty much kerosene. Lots of kerosene is distilled to make jet fuel.

John,
I bought it because the price of water pump is worth it. Only holds a few ounces. I was using washer and noticed the plug on the side came lose and oil started dripping out. Decided to change the oil and glad I did. The old oil hadn't been changed in years, dirty looking, expect metal.

I asked what makes it that makes it so expensive. What's in the oil that makes it different from other oils?

i think it was coal oil that was used back then not kerosene . not the same animal. i remember buying it for our coal oil lamps almost a century ago . $0.10 a gal.

That's why people pay $60 for two gallons of Kubota hydraulic oil, or whatever it costs for IH Hytan this week, or any other branded specialized oil.

The manufacturers have us all running scared that if we don't use their oil, our equipment will explode in a hail of sparks. Unfortunately we have no way to prove them right or wrong that isn't extremely expensive. Just using the "right" oil is a lot cheaper than any repair or replacement, so we pay whatever price they ask.

Of course every person has their limit, so they don't get too overboard. They know just how much to charge that you won't say, "%$#@ it, I've had enough of this extortion. I'm using the cheap Tractor Supply oil."

The answer is "nothing" but you won't believe it. A pressure washer is typically just a little reciprocating engine. Any good quality motor oil would do just as fine.

Tractor Supply and others sell a lot of non-branded oils because a lot of people don't fall for the branded oil hogwash.
