Swath board

A neighbor bought a John Deere 350 mower and the swath board is missing. Where can we get a used one? Thanks

We used to just make our own swath boards. Look at someone else's mower and draw a pattern of their swath board.

Go to ebay and search this "deere 350 mower swath board". There's at least one there. Could try the Deere guy by you. I've been able to get parts for old tractors (950 and 4520) from my Deere guy. More than once they've had to go out "third party" (like ebay) and get used.

Good luck.

I made one or two. I had the hardware from the old board, otherwise making the hardware is the somewhat difficult. Best to find an existing one on a mower and copy the parts. My experience was with IH mowers, JD may be different. Basic metal parts: a square piece of flat steel which needs to have hole drilled in the approximate center for the attaching bolt, probably 1/2 inch. A hole probably 1/4 or 5/16 in each corner to reinforce the wooden swath board and suitable bolts, nuts and washers. The 1/2 bolt with large flat washers and a nut, or nuts along with a coil spring because the swath board needs to have flexibility. A flat piece of steel to be a runner to go on the bottom of the swath board so the wood wont wear out so soon.

The wood part need to be a piece of oak or some hardwood measuring about 3/4 by 6 inches by about 2 feet long. A round stick about 3 feet long is attached to the board at an angle to throw the hay away from end of the cutterbar so that the mower slides will not hang up on the hay for the next swath. An old piece of broken shovel handle works fine. Its best if an original is examined before building this. Some disc mowers have steel swathboards which might give some ideas.

There are universal boards made out of steel avaible from your farm stores and I think they are under a Hundred. Actually think under fifty.

I made one for my NH 451 out of 4" wide steel, maybe 1/4" thick. Don't know the length offhand. It's probably 20 years old. Once in a while I'll back up or turn and catch it on something and bend it, but it bends back pretty easy.

I have made several swath boards during the decades in which we used sickle bar mowers. Replacements worked just as good as the originals.

If you make them "too" sturdy you run the chance of breaking the end shoe..I take mine off when trim mowing because the chance of breaking is stronger,,when field mowing I use a home made one.

You might also consider making a grassboard.
