2N hydraulics

I recently did the rebuild on the 2N hydraulics. I got the drooping arms to stop drooping, but it still doesn't lift much weight, not more than 100 lbs or so. I did notice there's a lot of sludge in the pan. I'm going to drain it, take off the pan and clean it next, but someone told me there is one or more screens or filters in it somewhere. I haven't located them. Does anyone know where they are, or have any suggestions why the thing won't lift any weight? It's a 1946, and I love it. I just wish it would lift better.

The 9N/2N/8N's didn't have any hydraulic filters. Or a pan.
What did you do as far as the rebuild on the hydraulics?
You might get more precise answers on the N forum here on YT.

I'm not so sure about terminology, but I changed out the thing that looks kind of like a cylinder with the rubber gaskets and of course replaced all of the top and side gaskets. The 3 point arms don't fade at all now, but not much lifting capability. I'm not sure what you're referring to with the N forum.

Terminology is very important when describing symptoms.
Extremely so when getting assistance over the internet.
We can't see what you're talking about.

The I&T FO-4 manual covers the N series tractors.
There are several versions of this manual, so watch for that.
You want one that has 120+ pages.

If you need terminology before you get it, you could try to
decipher the [b:29776be954]New Holland[/b:29776be954] website for the names.

What you are think pan to take off is actually the hydrolic pump and it is a piston type of pump. And there is no screens in that tractor. Been several years since I had mine apart and I had at that time had to replace a cracked top cover. So while I was in there I just droped the pump (very heavy) think I had to use a floor jack to handle it. Washed everything out as a lot of gunk from all the years. Think your relief valve may be sticking. Mine is a 44 bought new in May of 44.

Thank you! I actually argued with the guy telling me about screens and filters and pans, but he was so insistent I ended up listening to him! Where can I locate the relief valve? Can it be accessed through the side panel?

Yes but you need a service manual to tell you how to find and replace as you are only working by feel. You need to be able to go by the pictures in the manual. I have both the orignal tractor books and the ITT book, early and late versions and used them all and it was while I had the top cover off that I could actually see what I needed to. And you also need to hook up the linkage by feel through that little inspection hole. A lot easier if you could have the wheel off while doing it, I could not do that. It could be bent or just gumed up and sticking and just needing a good cleaning. When I had mine down I bought a new one because mine was sticking and making the arms hang up in the up position. Looked over the old one and looked better than the new one so I cleaned up the old one and it has been working for several years. My top cover cracked I think from a booster cylinder that I have that I have never seen anouther like it and have found no one anyplace that has ever even heard of one like it let alone seen one. While I was in there I took the pump out and had it apart and cleaned everything. It could be your pump is just too wore out to build pressure but used pumps should not be hard to find.
