Local NAPA Closing-2

I posted the other day about our local NAPA, that was very good with ag parts, closing, and the other local NAPA store not being quite so good at it. IE - not knowing what a David Brown 880 was (I was looking for a hydraulic filter, which they eventually found)
A couple guys got on me a little for not being a competent customer - I pulled it apart today to change it - and it's the wrong filter - I guess I really am incompetent...

Pete, We have been getting filters from Dave at Maple Grove Repair. He can order them from Baldwin We poured his house foundation and garage monolithic slab just down the road from Roadway Auto. We are working over in Laurens this week if you ever drive on 10.

You are NOT an incompetent customer. Simple fact is that it is the counterman's responsibility to look up parts, get parts from stock, and insure that you have the correct parts. If all of the work was on the customer, then we would only need trained monkeys behind the counters instead of countermen.

Note that I told one poster that he was out of line for his comments about who should look up the parts.

I will also add that when you are getting parts for an older and more obscure piece of equipment, it is helpful to get numbers from old filters if available.

My opinion.

Greg,
I'll try and stop by after work one day this week. You know it's the store in Worcester I'm talking about - Liz and her staff were really good. David ended up at the Cooperstown store, so I try and get him when I call there

Pete, I thought that you were talking about Worcester Napa. My wife worked with Dave at Royal Dodge years ago. Rowes in Oneonta is another place we go. Lance and Joe are the owners and Lance is the owner of the storage units out by Pindars Corners.

Jim,
I know what you mean - I know the part numbers for most of the filters for my stuff, but this tractor is owned by our family farm, so it gets neglected a little bit. I've just been spoiled a little - the woman that owned the store I used to go to was great, as was her staff - all my stuff is 30 - 40 years old, but whatever I was looking for, they could find it.

I look up 90% of my parts so I guess that makes me a fool for doing the counter guys work. I can say it t'ain as EZ as it looks. Most parts houses have a decent online look up and OEM has got much better. I can sped a hour looking up coolant hoses it beats having to wait days re-ordering to get the right ones.

A good parts man is worth his weight in gold...

What number did you get?

The lookup at www.wixfilters.com says the WIX number is 51309, NAPA drops the first number, making it a 1309.
51309

I never take an old filter off unless I'm pretty sure I have the right new one in hand. And I always look up my own filter numbers, wix used to have a good website but not so much any more. Bought K&N from Amazon for the MC's last fall.

I never tried that , but I get some funny looks when I lay an old hydraulic hose on the counter. Then I have to pay the penalty when I look at the oil on the carpet of my pickup

Pete what I have found for odd stuff is deal with a company that specializes in it. Like MM tractors, Studebaker vehicles, and so on. Some times local parts stores are not the answer. Went through this with an old Massey Harris on oil filter called so prophet of MH and correct filter was here in 3 days.

There's several ways of looking at who's responsible for looking up the right part. How many times have you stood in line because 1 of the 2 counter guys is tyed up 30 minutes trying to help a customer who doesn't know much more than what color his car/tractor is? Then I had a NAPA salesman say they don't carry ac clutches separate to the compressor.
For that matter, what % of the people you deal with actually know what they are doing? Truth is if you open a business and pay what it takes to hire competent help, your prices would be higher than competitors and no one would buy from you. On line shopping is the way of the future.

A good parts man disappears around here. Around 55. Replaced by some kid off the street. That may or may not show up for work. Then if he does he is
to busy on the phone or texting. I look up my own parts, take the list to the store. Tell them I want these parts. Saves time having the kid tell me
what I need.

I have a "filing" system for filters and drive belts, I mark what it fits either the box top or the sleeve the belt came in and staple it to a special place on the plywood wall. A special file or box would work well too.

Pete, Messicks has the parts catalogs on-line at the link below... newer 880's use a K920806 (replaced by K920522), for which WIX (filter supplier to NAPA) says "K920522 This is a valid competitive part number and there is no replacement at this time."

MAY be some other options by serial number, as well.

So, no luck at NAPA, about $40 through FIAT.

Most parts guys have been worthless throughout history. When you went up to the parts counter you always hoped you got the one good guy at the place because none of the other guys could find their way out of a wet paper bag.

These days you can't afford to pay for a good parts guy if you can even find one. It's a minimum wage job because the computer does the work 95% of the time, so you mostly get minimum wage people that are just drifting from job to job until their unemployment benefits reset. Occasionally you get a good kid that's smart and has lots of promise, but he's usually on his way to becoming a rocket surgeon, so he's gone in a few months too.
