Free Chicken House

Well almost free. I did have to pay for the electricity to run the saw and air compressor.

I still have to make a nest box on the one end; put on the doors; and install the bundle of shingles.
I scrounged everything to build it.
Free pallets from work; nails and screws I had laying around rusting; couple bundles of shingles I had left over from roofing my house; cement blocks I got from a building they were tearing down; Everything.
It is not snake or rat tight but that should keep the opossum from killing my chickens.

Yea some guys at work are calling me a cheap illegitimate child but that is OK. I just consider it frugal.

The only problem with pallet wood is the stuff is swamp oak or something like that. Very crappy wood. Give the whole structure a really good coating of wood preserve and a coat of paint. Those pallets will dissolve in the weather in nothing flat. Other than that it looks like a first time FAA project. Everything is straight too! You had fun and that is what counts. Almost looks like that TV show little house. Bet you had a heck of a time pulling the nails.

I started out trying to take the pallet apart and then pull the nails.
That got old real quick.
Then I just started cutting the nails with a fine tooth saw blade.

Took a good pallet and ripped the pieces of wood from another pallet to fill in the spaces.
So I only had to nail on every other board.
A couple of pallets had small spaces so I just used them as is.

John, Good job! Last summer my daughter wanted a duck. I said no and now we have 8! The wife found an article on the internet about building a shelter out of pallets. I said just go buy some 2x4's. Here are pic's of the pallet duck house that I built.

I've never had any luck pulling nails from pallets either, in spite of the You tube videos showing special homemade tools to pull nails.

Nothing wrong with frugal. Great idea.

I used two pallets with plywood tops and made a portable workbench on wheels. Comes in handy. When not in use, I store it under the front bucket of Terramite in pole barn so it doesn't take up floor space.

Actually if you have one of those good old fashioned slide hammer nail pullers. Use it with a little block of 1/8 metal plate under the claw. Pull SLOoowwly. Pulled a couple of those really big pallets apart that were made of 4 inch square timber. Pulled just about 100 nails and only broke two. Pushed them further in with a nail set. Problem with pallets is when they are put together the wood is usually still wet and things go pretty well. When they dry they turn to brittle and rock hard. Looked and found a picture and then found a "pallet paw". Looks kinda rugged. Also those big old shale bars work too.

That "pallet paw" is shown being used on pine pallets. Lots of luck using it on oak pallets. I have tried taking apart oak pallets and wound up with a lot of time spent and a lot of broken 1 x 4s. John in LAs method of cutting the nails sounds good and judging by his finished project works good.

I have to really pick my days to go on the outside since I only have a 18 foot boat.
So with the spring winds I usually stay close to home and chase the Sac-a-lait.

Been thinking about going down to see this $2500 camp a friend bought.
He has been trying to persuade me by sending pictures of all the channel cats they been catching.
