Ford 9N, Hard starting, new points, new carb;new coil, this 9n has been completely restored, but now it will start when it feels like it any suggestions? This engine has very good compression.!!

It is always better to trouble shoot then part not the other way around

#1 do you have a good blue/white spark at all plug wires that jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more. Did you set the points at 0,015 as they should be for a front mount distributor??

#2 do you have a good steady flow of gas out of the carb drain plug that will fill a pint jar in under 3 minutes?and yes catch the gas so as to measure and look for water dirt etc.

I completely restored this 9N about 5 years ago. I replaced all the ignition system, I replaced the carb. this 9N has always been hard to start I am at to a point I cannot find a way to fix this. Guess I will contact a repair garage, maybe they can figure it out. I will say once it is hot it starts right up. Right now it will not start at all, I have clean fuel, good spark but still nothing.

Got plenty of clean gas and good spark, I restored this completely about 5 years ago. it has always been hard to start, right now it will not start at all, got me confused

I restored this 9N about 5 years ago, all new parts from the frame up, but it has always been hard to start, starts right up when it is hot, now this thing will not start at all, I just don't know.

So if your in fact did a true restore you should have every thing back at factory specifications and if so it should be an easy start so either you just fixed what needed to be or you did something wrong.

I hate the term restore because few ever do a true restore they just fix and paint and that is it and that is not a restore.

You say you have good gas flow and good spark so is the spark good enough at all 4 plugs to jump that 1/4 inch plus gap?? You also say you have good compression as in what PSI?? If your compression is less then 90PSI you have poor compression. You may even have the timing off at the cam or the distributor which will cause hard starting or maybe you have the points set wrong. Many people make the mistake of setting the front mount distributor points at 0.025 and that is wrong and will cause starting problems

where are you located? If close some of us might be close to help you. I would look at the coil and spark first. Are the plugs wet with gas? Check spark and new plugs, yes new plugs. joe

I restored this 9N about 5 years ago, all new wiring, all new ignition, timing was set then, it has always been hard to start, yes plugs are wet too much choke, my fault, located in Chillicothe Ohio, I just put in new plugs and a new kit for the carb. I checked the points and readjusted them, I checked the timing and reset. I will be putting the dist. back on tomorrow. I will post my results, thank you.
