Was over to my neighbors today and he started up his 400 to show me how nice it runs and it sure does. However, at half throttle one of the hoses coming from pump chatters very load. I said whats up with
that? He said it's always done that. I asked if it was low on fluid? We checked it and it was down a little but not bad. One thing I noticed was fluid was real milky. Could that be his problem? Is that
chatter normal. Also he just cleaned the filter. Said it was pretty bad but perfectly clean now.

Hose coming from pump, or going to pump...suction hose with internal failure, restricting flow, pump starving for oil? Milky fluid...water in oil...pumps don"t pump water too well. Check those 2 possibilities first.

Either hose or steel line can vibrate. Put a chunk of shaped solid rubber between the pipes and hose clamp it in place. If rubber, just hose clamp the place it vibrates to the other hose or? They do vibrate from engine vibration. Jim

Probably just harmonics. My M will vibrate a hitch pin in the drawbar at a specific RPM. Hitch pin remains quiet at any other engine speed.

A 400 takes so little hydraulic oil, like 6 quarts, that it's cheap and easy to change it, so why doesn't he? It'll still be a little milky after the first change because you can't get the oil out of the lines and pump, but it will be better.

That said I don't think the milky oil is making a bit of difference in this situation. Milky means the additives in the oil are holding the water in suspension, so it's not "pumping water." It's pumping oil with water droplets suspended in it.

As for the chatter, depends on the chatter. Does the engine seem to be laboring? Does it make a funny noise every little while like a honk or a crunch? Those would indicate internal problems in the hydraulic system such as a blockage.

If it's just vibration... Do the rubber block thing.

I know what you mean with the vibration but this is different. If you hold your hand tight around this hose for a little bit your hand will go numb from the buzzing. Whereas your hitch pin will stop if you
hold your hand to it. Also this is a rubber hose so the vibration must be coming from within the hose.
