Thanks for the alternator help

Thanks everyone for the thoughts on the alternator. I got a rebuilt from o Reilly's last night. when I put it on it looked like the main wire from selonoid to the alternator had a little green corrosion when I took the wire off. ran another wire from the selonoid to the alt leaving the old one in place an added a ground to the alt case.
fired the old girl up and she charged 14.73 volts at the alt. with all lights on and ac on 14.66 and it wasn't getting hot. maybe the issue has been found. guess time will tell.
Thanks again
Gary

Crummy wires will get ya. They can cause resistance and that equals poor current flow thus poor charging. The bigger problem they cause is voltage and current not getting where it needs to go. What happens is now the altinator basically is un hooked. That is a big no no and it eventually fries the altinator. Crummy wire is kinda like you making and unhooking the connection hundreds of times a second. Your bracket should provide a good ground on its own. The power leads are the culprit, CHANGE IT ! There is a trick I use doing electrical wiring and connections in cooking equipment. Commercial toasters, hot wells, high output heating coils. With the power off feel your way around a little with the wires. If you flex them a tiny bit and they feel cruncy it is going bad. Copper wire will crystalize from heat. Now to confirm things,,,,,,turn on the unit and let it run for 5 or ten minutes. Unhook the power and feel you connections. If any are HOT, there is your problem. Change it.Glad you found your problem.

the wire did not feel bad just the end by the alternator looked bad. gonna try to replace the end and cut the wire back a little bit. noticed my gauge is off a bit. meter read 14.73 gauge showed just under 14. did not check with meter at gauge but will tonight.

Hello gary in neb,

Voltage readings are taken at the battery to check for proper charging. You should get between 13.8 to 14.2 volts. Voltage regulator will not work if the alternator loses its ground. The new ground may do the trick!
