Rear tractor tire sizes

I have a 1952 B John Deere. It has 11.2x38 r1 rear tractor tires. I need to replace them. I have a couple of questions: 1) What does the 11.2 measure? 2) Can you replace the ll.2x38 tires with 12.4x38 tires?
Thanks in advance for your information.

I have one of those B's someone stuck 13.6 -38 on it. All depends on how humped up you want the tire to look. Those are really humped up in the middle ! It should of had wider A model rims on it for those.

11.2 is roughly the width of the tire carcass on the correct rim. This is also darned close to the unloaded height from the rim bead to the top of the tire.

This lets you do quick match about how tall a tire is,( 2 x 11.2) + 38 = approximately 60" tall

Not exact but helpful sometimes.

I usually refer to that measurement as being taken at the "bulge" of the tire. ie the widest part of the tire, whereas old size markings referred to the width of the rim. 10 inch rim, 11.2 bulge, or max cross-section.

Deere never should have put that 11.2 or old size 10 tire on that B, that was a stupid mistake, It should have been the 12.4 or old size 11 from factory and if you go larger like the other poster is talking about the surface of the tire will be just a bit more rounded instead of flat as some think it should be. The old 10, 11 & 12 sizes were designed more round to start with so I think it looks better as I am from that era. I had a 46 B with the orignal factory 10" tires on it, the old style Firestones with the closed tread and a 49B that is the same as you have and had Firestone 23* field & road in the 12.4 size and the old firestone on the same width rim stood 2" taller than the F & R tire. The Goodyear and Titan and the Firestone 45* tire were the same height as the orignal 10" tire. All measured same width but height different. I would NEVER put a 11.2 tire on that tractor, only for field work a 12.4 tire but if doing a lot of road running then the 13.6 and not worry about rim width.

John I put a lot of tires on B's over the years. Probably 95% 11.2X38's. Standard size works well on the old gals.

You may have put on and gotten by with all of therm BUT you did not get the max work out of the tractors. And the customers probably did not even realize the tractors would do better with a larger size.
