Need help overhauling a Ford 4000 Tractor

 The guy that is wanting to attempt this has quiet a bit of knowledge with car/trucks, but -0- on tractors. I saw on here where a overhaul kit could be bought for a reasonable price. We already bought 286.00 worth of gaskets etc. hoping we can use them and buy the parts we don't have. I saw that a manuel was available too, my question is does it give instructions on how to over haul ? I already ordered two books from Amazon/ Ebay, but there is not enough info in either one to do an overhaul. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. My husband was the farmer and he died in 2012, and I AM LOST WITHOUT HIM.

Lots of folks willing to help over on the Ford board. When posting questions about the Ford 4000, be sure and specify whether it's a three or four cylinder tractor; they're totally different machines. The earlier four cylinder 4000 is basically the same as the 801 series. And within the four cylinder 4000 series there is a bewildering range of variants: gas vs diesel, standard vs row crop, five speed vs Select-O-Speed transmission. The more specifics you provide the better the advice you'll get.

If the engine isn't burning oil, there's probably no need to overhaul it. Make sure the transmission and clutch are working properly before you go into the engine.

Normally when someone says they have (quiet a bit of knowledge)It will mean (very little)
Mark's advise is right on to go to the Ford board. More details on how the tractor is acting as well as telling if it is gas or diesel will be a great help. Pictures are also a great help.

I've never understood why people with "quite a bit of" knowledge about cars are bewildered by a tractor.

The basic principles are the same. It's just shaped differently.

The engine still does suck-squeeze-bang-blow, but it probably has a different number of cylinders. Big deal. If he knows what a distributor cap looks like under the hood of the car he can surely locate it on the tractor engine.

As my first year vocational school
auto mechanic class teacher said:
"although the application may be
different, the principal is still the
same." (Kept stating that when we
wanted to work on cars and he assigned
us a lawn mower engine) .

First off, welcome to YT, and also sorry for
your loss. Second, is it a 3 cylinder or 4
cylinder, and gas or diesel? The 3 cylinders
don't have sleeves, and some of the diesels
have cavitation or porosity issues with the
blocks fairly often. The machine shops I
work with around here won't do any block
work without first boring the parent bore
block and sleeving it back to standard. They
said that was due to liability to eliminate
"rework" from people that didn't want it
done the first time, but then blamed them
for the block leaking internally. Although,
if it is gas or low houred, and it was mine
and I wasn't doing the work for someone
else, it'd probably be just fine.

Thanks, I was not aware there was a Ford board, will try to find it. I do have pictures. It lost compression, and it is 3 cyl diesel. He took it apart about a year ago, then gave up.

I didn't think to mention that the "Ford board" is here at Yesterday's Tractors.

I recommend getting the Ford factory service manual. It is not cheap! You should be able to get one through a New Holland dealer, or maybe you can find a used copy on eBay. Here's one such listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-FORD-3000-4000-SERIES-TRACTOR-SERVICE-REPAIR-SHOP-OPERATORS-OWNERS-MANUALS-/161468278033?hash=item2598426511:g:H~0AAOSwR0JUUmbS

You'll find a parts breakdown for your tractor on the New Holland site, which may prove very useful. Go to newholland.com, pick "Agriculture", then pick "partstore" at the top of the page. (They constantly change the site, so this could change at any time.)

Putting together a basket case diesel could prove challenging, particularly if someone else took it apart. Good luck.
