Forklift Question

Hyster S50XM im looking at buying has a broken left front axle shaft. Has anyone ever seen this before? Its super cheap and runs great, if it could be as easy as changing an axle shaft I would buy it. Shaft is broke pretty close to the end and seems rounded off instead of broken strait through, im suspecting something in the diff is screwed up and might have caused it to break off weird like that but, that would also explain why theyre selling it cheap. It is a heavy shaft, prob 1" solid.

Is it a full floating type axle? i.e. 3/4 ton pickup axle?

Does the axle turn easily when running, if so, does the differential make any noise?

Smooth break sounds like a long term overload. Not a snap failure.

it is cheap because of the fact it is a s or solid tire model and if it has the GM 4 cylinder engine parts are hard to find and some are longer available I did a complete rebuild with a reman engine on mine 4 years ago it is a H 55XM and I was not able to locate a lot of parts it took two years to redo as it was a gasoline set up and I had been looking for one for years when propane prices were high I looked high and low for a gasoline model as most LP engine set ups did not include a gasoline fuel tank mine was duel fuel, as far as the shaft there should be plenty of complete front axles used instead of rebuilding if it has been open awhile you will need to tip the forklift a little to the side as when you pull the shaft as it will drain the gear oil out of the differential. You just need to commit to the project knowing it's value is limited because of parts availability make sure it's worth it and has all the options you want otherwise let it go.

You might try United engines for GM engine parts. I don't understand why parts are so scarace. GM made thousands of 3.0L industrial engines which are common in forklifts. I know they made the engine up until 2013 because I have one.

If it is a free floating axle and broke near the cap it could be loose wheel bearings. Seen this many times.

Brand new industrial GM. These engines were never used in vehicle but there were thousands, if not millions made, Used as inboard marine engines, on forklifts, generators and irrigation pumps as well as in the gas and oil industries.
