White 2-85 question

My friend Jeff has a white 2-85 with hydraulic issues. When using it on the haybine the hyd gets hot and make noise. When on the manure spreader it has trouble lifting the gate at idle. Brakes and steering work great. This be a pump issue or valve or maybe something else? Another thing is the pto doesn't shut off completely, just turns real slow unless you shut off the engine and restart it. Any ideas where to start looking?

Oftentimes when hyd oil is getting hot, and noisy, it"s an internal leak...cracked housing, etc. so the pump keeps on pumping.

The major issue on the white closed centres is the compensator valve on the main closed centre pump has to be set lower than the relief valve. If not, once tripped into pumping it will never reset until turned off and it will heat oil like crazy. Because the relief is open the pressure and flow available isn't consistant either. There are other little quirks of these systems as well that the white factory service manual covers really well.

That sounds like it could be the problem. How do you access that valve? Do you have a book that you could maybe send me pics of those pages? Would like to avoid buying a new pump if posible.

On that PTO brake, adjust the linkage. My 105 was doing that when I bought it a year ago. Unhook the linkage, then pull on the lever on the valve. You should hear it when the brake kicks in. Adjust the linkage so it holds it there when you pull it all the way back. I had to adjust it again a few weeks ago because I was having to hit the lever to get the spreader to stop. You'll have to lengthen the linkage.
