Pulverizer vs Smooth Roller

These days I see two types of rollers, the Brillion type, Pulverizer, with the cast iron individual wheels somewhat "v" shaped and then I see the large smooth surface rollers. Are they intended to do the same thing or are they intended for different purposes.

I see on the Brillion site there are different wheels that can be used.

My Dad always pulled a Brillion roller behind his JD grain drill.

Thanks.

In this area the large smooth rollers are used on hay fields to push down the rocks that were too small to be worth picking but big enough to dull the disk cutters.

The Brillion style is for better seed to soil contact, greatly reducing needed alfalfa seed, for example. With a cast iron packer behind the drill I could get a good alfalfa stand with 10 lbs/ac, vs 15-16 lbs for no packer. At $7 per lb for good alfalfa seed, that adds up fast. The smooth roller is a heavy packer that smooths the soil and pushes the rock down to surface level, allowing much nicer operation of a bean header. Some of those heavy packers are made of 5/8 wall pipe.

Can't afford a big smooth roller so I made a hitch to pull two Brillion style rollers to roll beans. Doesn't blow as easy and a hard rain will soak in and not run off. Takes a 30' pass. Two 15' Case packers....makes it nice to combine beans.
