April 18, 1943: US P-38 Lightenings ambush and destroy two Japanese Betty bombers carrying, among others, Admiral Isoroku Yamomoto over Bougainville.

My BIL was stationed at a P38 base in the pacific, but I don't know that he said which island he was on. He was a baker; he always had coffee and hot cinnamon rolls ready for the pilots when they landed. The pilots were supposed to go to de-briefing immediately after landing, but hot cinnamon rolls before they went to de-briefing became top priority .

P-38 was a great fighter, these models were the P38-G with twin 1400hp Allison V12s and counter rotating props.
