Chevy Colorado?

Brother is considering a 2006 Colorado 4x4 extended cab 2.8l with $
180,000 miles for 2k. Anybody know anything about them? Reading around a bit some people say total junk and other say great little truck, I don't know what to believe, lol.

What were some common problems? How many miles do they generally last? Pros/cons?

I bought one four years ago, and had it two years. Local Chevy garage and auto parts store across the street both told me to get rid of it as soon as they found out! They were correct. Chevy parts person said back then parts availability was already a problem. I soon needed power steering lines(rotted out where they laid on a frame member and caught crap) One of them was not available. Fortunately, that one was still OK. Brakes are constant problem- either hanging up, or a little gravel piece catching and squealing in the front brakes.

It was a nice riding, driving, and looking vehicle. But the cancer underneath was terrible. Mileage was no better than my Silverado.

Oldest son had one as did next door neighbor. Terrible fuel mileage, always something breaking. Not Chevies greatest vehicle from what I saw.

We have an 06 we use around the warehouses. Has the 5cyl. They pull the mowers to different warehouse locations, and bosses son uses it some. It has around that mileage on it. Just this year it has had a new exaust manifold, throttle body, both cats, front end rebuilt, and two or three other things I cant think of right now. He bought it a little less than 100000 on it 3 years ago and this is all the work thats been done to it other than routine service and brakes.

It is actually an Isuzu product, not a Chevy.

If it has the 5 cylinder engine, the valve train goes bad and you can't get parts. Only option is a (rare) junkyard head which probably has the same issues. At least that's what a friend of mine says. He said his was clacking away so bad it sounded like it was going to blow up. I rode in the truck and never heard a thing, even when he told me it was clattering right then and there. So I don't know what to believe. He might have just wanted to justify a new vehicle to his wife.

I had an 08 and an 09. 2wd ex cab 5cyl. Small cab, small box. My 1/2 ton 4wd 5.3 got nearly the same mpg. I have nothing positive to say about them.

Mileage for my 09 lightly equipped crew cab two wheel drive with the five cylinder is 19 for the kind of rural driving I do. I keep track of every drop. It doesn't matter if I burn straight unleaded, 10%, 15% or 20% ethanol. I haven't had any trouble with it yet at 60,000 miles. I have seen 23 MPG on long trips but those are few and far between . It drives real nice but rides a little rough.

I had an 04 and liked it. 2 wheel drive with the 4 cylinder in it. Never had any problems with it and owned it since new. Had over 200k on it when I sold it and it ran perfect

I have a '06 Colorado with about 44k on it. Mine is 2WD and 5-speed manual. Other than some minor problems it has been great little truck for the seven years that I owned it. No major issues but mine is still low mileage. Most of my driving is on paved roads. I have had the squealing front brake problem (junk was stuck in the grove in the pads), I upgraded the battery terminal connections, and the safety switches on the petals corrode easily. If you ever need to replace the starter, you have to remove the intake manifold (i replaced mine trying to chase down a starting problem which turned out to be those safety switches). Finally, if it does NOT have keyless entry (like mine), that generation of GM Passlock can be finicky.

There is an online forum dedicated to the owners of these trucks with lots of information on how to fix the common problems. For a little truck, it is great, and I get around 22-24 mpg with my manual.

The truck sold before he we got there to check it out, so it must have been a good deal. :)

Probably will just keep looking at Dakota's, as the Colorado's don't sound like the best trucks ever built, lol

I am on my third Dakota now, First got totaled when car ran a stop sign. The Dakota is classified as a mid size truck while the Chevy was a smaller truck. I had a S10 that was forerunner of what you were looking at. I like the size of the dakotas. First was a 2000 extended cab with 4.7 2 wheel, automatic. When it got wrecked all I could find was a 01 with 6 and regular cab, towing capacity was supposed to be close to the 4.7 8 cylinder, way less and I needed the towing capacity so I got a 03 quad cab 4 wheel 4.7 automatic to handle all my needs after the 06 Caravan got totalled, I needed interior room.

I have a 2010 with the 5cyl, 4x4, auto. Bought used with less than 60k, now at 84k. One of the fittings to the heater core broke, so replaced both. A known problem. Also, the wiring to the extend cab door breaks and causes the airbag light to go on, again a known problem. Both of these are easy, inexpensive fixes.

Kind of a basic pickup, but I like it and I think it can git up and go if you can stand the wail. Mileage 19 - 24.5mpg. Lower in winter (idling???). 21-21.5mpg at 70mph on the highway.
