Is this chimney pipe asbestos?

This is the original boiler exhaust pipe going out the roof. Is this asbestos? Can I cut it, and with what? My new boiler has pvc going out sidewall, so don't need it.
Would like to take out, but it has the coupler on it so would have to cut bigger hole in roof. It is about 8foot long, so quite heavy.

Sure does look like the old James Mansville chimney pipe that we used to have when I was a kid.I do not have any good advice as to how to remove or dispose of it. The one on our old farm house , ran up a out side wall , and we just pushed it over. And I hate to say it , but we just dragged it off to the bush. 40 years ago no one thought much about these kind of things.

I would assume it is until proven different.

Finding out could open a can of worms!

If there is any way to leave it alone, that may be your best option.

Problem is, if you ever want to sell, it will probably need to be dealt with. Chances are any inspection will reveal even more asbestos in other areas.

It depends it depends it depends. In most states a homeowner may remove up to a limited amount of ACBM Asbestos Containing Building Material. You could check with your local environmental control agency. You can send a small chunk to a laboratory and get it tested, and find out for sure what it is, ACBM or non-ACBM. Even if it is, it may not be "friable" UNLESS and until you crumble it or crush it. But it depends on your local state regulations. Easy to check and find out for sure. I would not cut it, break it, damage it, until you find out. In any event, go to your farm and home and get a respirator designed for asbestos, only $30 or $40 or so, you'll be glad you did.

Years back, I took an insulation sample to one of the chemists at work. He looked at it under a micro-scope and determined it was fiber glass. Fiber glass ends are melted/rounded as in blown glass.

Maybe the local high school or college could help you out.

Correct smallercrawler. That is transite. Transite is a mixture of cement and asbestos. It was also used for water mains in the 60's, though a slightly different design.
