When You Get Great Service

Hello and happy Easter to all.

Yesterday the son of the man who runs the local farm machinery repair shop came to my farm to do some maintenance work for me. He changed oil and filters on some of my work tractors and replaced a battery in one. He later checked another tractor to see if the noise I was hearing was anything major and he found the source of the noise and fixed it.

He than helped me put the hood on a tractor that I have been reconditioning after checking to see if I had all of the hoses and wires connected correctly.

This would not be worth posting but for the fact that when he was done he would not take any pay for his time. I have a bill for the parts only and they were very reasonable. I just want everyone to know that there are still good people who do not mind helping their friends and neighbors and that not everyone is out for the almighty dollar.

AMEN to what you & Chilidawg. It s great to hear there are a few good people in this country still. Richard

A "thank you" note with a gift card to an area restaurant is a good way to express thanks for a job well done.

Sadly that can also get you fired. When I was on the road. I would stop by customers in town just to visit, see if they needed anything. Company found
out and told me to knock it off.Unless I was selling something.

But it is good to see some people care about friends and willing to help out. I do the same thing around this town. I hope he never forgets what comes
first. Friendship and caring about people are the most important things to have.

No chance of him being fired as he was here on his day off and no one would fire a great mechanic with his ambition and skills. As for giving him something like a gift certificate he would be offended as when he says that he wants no pay he means that it is a gift and a 'thank you" is enough.

His father is like him in that he often refuses pay for minor things. They have lots of friends in this area. Last year I posted that their garage caught fire and half burned to the ground on a Friday morning. Over 30 Amish men showed up that afternoon and stripped out the burned mess and on Saturday they completely rebuilt the building., and by Monday you would have had to look hard to see any signs of a fire. The Amish charged him nothing for their work as they said that he had done enough for them already.

Yes, I know that it is hard to believe, but there are still some good people around.

We just had a guy who removes dangerous trees for a living, climb a 70 ft fir tree and rescue my grand daughters cat. He was on his way to a job and said $25 for gas money was good. My wife was there so he got a very good tip and the job to cut down the tree because it was leaning over their house

I have been in business for a lot of years. Some of my customers have been with me for all of those 40 years. Some of them are my close friends and neighbors, some are not. Most of those friends knows that I have always tried to do them a good job and charge them a price we could both live with. That's the reason they have continued to patronize my business for so many years. A while back, I lost a good customer and a friend. He quit coming to my shop because he felt I had over charged him for a job. I have no control over the price of parts and lot of times I let my good customers have them for exactly what they cost me. As I did in this case. He's getting up in years and a little on the stubborn side and I could tell he wasn't happy with the bill, and he hasn't come back. Now I have lost a customer and I thought, a friend. I have found over the years it is much easier to do business with a total stranger than it is a friend. You give a stranger a price and he takes it or leaves it. If he leaves, you haven't lost something you never had. When you loose a customer and a friend in the same deal, it's bad.

You bet there are still good people around. And many of them. For every bad story you tell I can tell 20 good stories. I like to help my neighbors when I can. Never want or expect anything in return. Rarely do I need help with anything but when I do, my neighbors line up to help me back.

I from time to time, give guys I work with that help me out in a pinch, and $25 dollar gift card to Subway, Chiles, etc. as to show appreciation for their help. Really surprising how they will go out of their way to help you again. I don't give them one everytime they help me either. I think it helps show they are appreciated too. Funtwohunt

I never thought a company would fire the only man they had. That knew about the older Onan systems. But they did. Now they call me for help.

But anyway I am glad to see there are still people that care more about people than money. Hope he keeps it up.

I have great neighbors, 2 retired farmers that still have lots of tools, equipment and expertise. They are ready to step in and help me, and I really appreciate their friendship and support. It is hard to get them to take a little pay, but their time and equipment are of great value to me....almost as valuable as their friendship and sense of humor.

I have just a small one bay shop. I tell my customers. I will work at this price, you pay the same for the parts as I do. No mark ups so I don't want to hear any complaints. Due to my bad health I will work on it when I can. That got rid of allot of cheap customers. Really hated the ones driving sixty thousand dollar trucks. That complained about a hundred dollar repair bill.Told me he could get it done cheaper in Bryan. Which is 60 miles away. So I said take it to Bryan.

I have about 15 good customers. They pay cash in advance for parts. After I give them a copy of the order sheet. I will search around for the cheapest deal I can find. They know how I work and that I will take care of them. I just finished three days on a ladies mower. Went through everything on it. Just a little push mower. Rebuilt the engine out of good spare parts I had.Charged her 20.00 dollars. Because I know she has no extra money and I am retired. Gives me something to do. I some times get paid in pies and cakes or things from the garden. Fresh milk and butter is also accepted as payment.

Yep- You are right about the 'firing' part. I spent 25 years at night driving tractor-trailer for UPS and we were forbidden to stop and help anyone with anything. One guy stopped and picked up a couple of owner/operators that were stuck in a snow storm on I70, the company found out and fired him. They once fired a 'package driver' after a motorist rear-ended him at a stop sign; their reason was "He shouldn't have been there at that time"!

I did stop a few times to help motorists on my run and, invariably, the person would want to know how to contact my boss so they could make sure he knew about my 'good deed'. I would tell them that what I had done was against company rules and if they really wanted to return the favor to me to 'just forget it ever happened'! Earlier this week on the news I saw a report where a UPS driver had saved a family from a house fire and then put out the fire with a garden hose and the reporter called him a 'selfless hero'. Knowing that outfit as I do I expect that he was either fired or given time off without pay!

Hey Billy, wanna move to northern Minnesota?? Our favorite mechanic went out of business a couple years ago due to cancer. He was in his 40's. Don't know where to go now. WE NEED YOU!!

Dang, I wish there were more good mechanics out there. But now too many folks are out for as much of that almighty dollar as they can get. There's always more customers out there, but never enough dollars!

Don't take this the wrong way, I think it's great that you have someone who is skilled to help you out with this stuff. I will say though.
You don't understand how these business minds think. (We have business school to thank for this) They are taught that good help is as plentiful as sand on the beach. Some businesses are alright with you helping a friend out. Other's are not.
I worked for a business that gave me chit for working on stuff at home that I didn't own. And by didn't own, I mean my father owned it. They owned the rights to work on all colours of farm equipment in this province, and if the ownership/receipt didn't have my name on it, I wasn't to be working on it. I worked at a satellite store, and after I raised enough cain the main store set him straight. I did end up quiting shortly after though, for that and other reasons.

Happy Easter to the 2underage family... and all YTer's.

2underage,
You must be a special person to receive treatment like that. :)

Tony? He's always been a good kid in the 20 years I've known him. Same for Gene, just a nice, honest man. We're lucky to have him.

Where are you at again?

That's not what he said. He said he didn't charge him labor, probably because he's done a boat load of business with them over the years. He paid for parts. Same guy checked out an injector pump for me, no charge outside of parts. But, after their fire I made a sizable donation to their rebuilding effort. What goes around, comes around.
