Depth bands on planter markers - help

There are times when my planter markers will hit exactly on an anhydrous knife slot. They are Kinze 15 inch markers so when they hit just right they can go deep. Even though I farm hills on the contour sometimes you are going up or down a slight grade and the markers just leave too big of a cut. I see some have depth or gauge bands on them. My question is if you have 15 inch diameter marker blades what would typically be the diameter of the depth or gauge bands??????? Maybe a 15 inch marker with a 12 or 13 inch depth band?????? Thanks for your ideas. Andy

It depends to a degree on the soil. I would think that limiting the depth to 2 to 3 inches of "slicing" might be reasonable. Jim

Changing the angle of marker can help also, to make them more or less aggressive. How soon after appling anhydrous are you planting. It would seem to me to be pretty soon to affect anhydrous?

I generally try to wait 5 to 7 days after ammonia application. Some say to wait 7 days while I have seen people plant the next day. The ammonia is not my concern. I am concerned about the occasional deep furrow the marker leaves once in a while that can cause an increased flow of water to run down that single area causing erosion. If I had some depth bands the cut made by the marker blade would be minimal. I should add this is in no-till. I apply ammonia and plant. Some places the ground is hard where no NH3 knifes went and where the NH3 knife did go it can be very soft which causes the increased depth.

I would think 2-2.5 inches would be appropriate. remember, the disk will wear, and with a depth band the effective depth will get to be less with time.

The trouble with depth bands is that they can build up with soil and then you have no mark. The depth bands that are on the back side of the blades work the best but even they can become packed full of soil in sticky ground.

As for depth I would say 2 inches. So you would want 11 inch bands on a 15 inch marker blade.
