Can you change a 540 pto to 1000 by just installed an adapter that changes the splines? I assume you can, but wanted to get input from some of you. Thanks....

You have not stated what the application is but this site may offer a solution instead of the Hub City gearboxes.

What tractor are you desiring to change pto speed? Some tractor models one can change pto stub shaft which changes from 540 to 1000 rpm & vice versa.

Some machines can have the onboard gearbox changed .

The mower would only run about 1/2 speed, and wouldn't work very well.

A 5210 is unlikely to power any mower that came equipped with a 1000 input. Isn't that tractor about 60 horse? 1000 input usually starts when a constant 80hp input is required...

b I don't know where you get the 80 horse thing. I believe our 574 has a 1000PTO on as well as the 540 . It has been a long time since I used the PTO on it, so would have to go look. It has been like 2 years since I used it for PTO work with 12 tractors around.

1000 rpm pto doesn't limit the low end hp of a piece of equipment but size of equipment does. I've seen tractors with very low pto hp with the 1000 rpm speed.

It is rated at 45 pto hp.

Most tractors up to 60-75 hp are 540 pto. Tractors over that are 1000 pto.

The shaft spinning at that speed can only apply 75 or so hp easily, without breaking something. (Some grain augers use up to 135hp with 540pt but they are very hard on tractor drive lines.....)

Over 100 hp and you need the faster, bigger pto to transfer enough hp.

If your 45 hp tractor is trying to run a big load, a converter won't work.

A disc mower likely won't use more than 50hp, so it would have the power barely, but you don't have enough speed with out a gear case converter, which are spendy.

Same here. In fact, my old JD 4010 gas had a 540 PTO on rear and a 1000 PTO mid-mount.

I think your best bet all around would be to find a mower with 540. You should have no problem finding a buyer for your 1000.

(quoted from post at 17:24:06 04/15/17) JD 1418 mower.....would not be in heavy grass. Cutting about 7" above ground (rocks).

I hope it's pull type & not 3 pt style(integral) or it will be difficult to keep frt wheels of the 5210 on the ground unless you operate it as semi-integral.

SOme of the IH utilities had a 1000 shaft in addition to the 540 shaft for running sprayer pumps at low engine rpm, etc.... What I'm referring to is the implement end. When you get a machine with a constant 70-80 hp demand they generally go to 1000 shaft to reduce the torque requirement in the driveline. That's why the mower he listed has a 1000 line on it. It take a lot more power than that 45 hp tractor is going to give it.

You can go to 540 from 1000 by using an adapter and running approximately 1/2 speed. Going to 1000 from 540 won't work because you will still only have 540 rpm for something that needs 1000 rpm.
