Looking to buy a crossbow to hunt deer.I know a lot
about firearms but nothing about bows/crossbows.I
want something with moderate power(fps) and not
too loud when fired. And did I mention I was frugle
(cheap).Looking to spend 300 to 600
bucks(US).Thanks

There are 2 morons up here that just got busted for jack lighting and shooting 8 deer with a crossbow and leaving them dead, not even taking the meat. I bet when they finally get bailed out they'll be looking for money for a lawyer. Might check with them and get their cross bow cheap.......

Not much, I know...

first thing would be to check with your state dnr to see if crossbow hunting is permitted. some states only allow a cross bow for a dis-abled hunter.

Been using a crossbow to deer hunt for a couple decades now due to my back problems. At the time I got the top of the line Barnett quad 300 which is a 300fps bow and have killed a good many deer with it over he years. It came with a 5 line scope so center line is 10 yards and next line is 20 and so on to 50 yards. I have looked at other bows and from what I can see if I where to replace this one I would buy another Barnett. I have they have improved them since I got this one and have some throwing the arrow out at well over 350fps

I bought a new PSE Fang at Cabela's 2015. One of the fastest crossbows for the price, which is very reasonable. Sighted it in from 20 out to 60 yards very accurate. Highly recommend it. You can buy faster but the price goes up fast too when you do that.

I have a 10 point I bought 4-5yrs ago. I think it was the cheapest ten point you could buy at the time. Was around $500. it's kind of slow by today's standards, 305fps, but have never had a deer duck anything 40yds or less. It is kind of loud, but also not an issue under 40yds. I've never tried shooting at a deer farther than that just because there is a noticeable difference in speed from 30-40yds. Some of the newer faster one's can probably stretch it out to 50-55 and be ok. I did mess up a cam a couple years back. Operator error. Whacked it off a tree branch. Their customer service was very good. Got the replacement parts I needed within a week or two sent to my door step. I did have to pay for them, but didn't mind. Was my fault for not paying attention when I pulled the trigger. There are a few brands that make some that are narrower than the rest. I'd look hard at one of those.

I bought a Parker Bushwacker it has 300 fps . Great entry level crossbow i paid 399 for it. used it 2 years sold it to a good friend for 200 bucks and he used it one year and he wants to sell it. i think 200 bucks is what he is asking . I bought a Parker Thunderhawk around 325 fps and about 150 pounds of pull. I am very impressed. Shooting a Deer further than 50 yards is pretty tuff with a crossbow or a compound bow. I know everybody knows somebody that can kill one at 100 yards with a bow well i call horse crud on that. What made me limit my crossbow shots to 45 yards is when you pull the trigger you can actually have time to watch the arrow or bolt hit the target unlike a gun which is pretty much instant. For a startled Deer to move suddenly it has to drop down some first. It will hear the shot from the bow. So i have found out for me 45 yards is the perfect distance to always get the kill. Anything past that i think is just luck and stand the chance to not getting a clean ethical shot.

I also have a 10 point with ACUdraw that I have been using for 6 years. I like the ACUdraw crank for disarming (even thought the manufacturer says you can't use it for that).

I could have gotten the same one with it, but was another $100 and I cheaped out. I ruin about 1 bolt per year repeatedly shooting it into the ground to unload it. Would be handy.

IMO Barnett is about the bang for the buck  ! Yea there are better ones out there, worse too for that matter but value wise Barnett will do nicely. While I do hunt with a crossbow I don't do a lot of shooting. Couple of bolts to check the zero before opener and then whatever may walk in front of me. If I were shooting a couple times a month just for the heck of it I'd look at spending more money for something top of the line. For what I do I'll stick with my Barnett.

1970-1955 how quiet/ loud is your fang?as far as feel/balance so far I like either the pse fang or ten point titan SS.will try to find a bow shop where I can shoot them or another brand model before I decide.really like some of the reverse designed (limbs mounted backwards) but they are like 1400 bucks
