I 1956 International I600 Diesel, It has oil coming out of muffler so we took the positions out to replace the rings and it had a lot of oil sitting on top & bottom of the head gasket but no oil was on top of the Pistons. Any idea why I would have so much oil just sitting there?

are you sure its oil and not diesel? how good was it running? did you check compression? are spark plugs burning clean? amazes me people tear an engine apart before the diagnosis is done.probably unburnt diesel from a faulty injector. did you run the tractor to operating temperature, or just let it idle cold? when those injectors are not up to snuff she will slober running cold.did you monitor the oil level to see if its actually using oil? does it switch over to diesel smoothly without smoking and missing?

Yes we did diagnosis the engine before we took it apart. We have been doing this for 25 years . And This is our 298 tractor we restored. The tractor was running okay except for the oil blowing out of the exhaust. And we knew that the rings were bad. It had been running for about 45 min before we took it apart.
