Massey woes

I have a 2003 Massey 1429 with a 3cyl Iseki diesel. It's been running very rich, especially on startup, so I removed the injectors and took them apart and cleaned them. I reinstalled them and the lines. I bled at the injector pump and cracked the lines and bled them at the injectors. Now I've gone from poor running to no running. It cranks but will not start. What have I done wrong?

you can not just take the injectors apart clean them and put them back together they have to be set at the right pop of pressure and that takes a skilled person with the right tool the set pressure is something around 3500 psi if i recall

Try disconnecting the air cleaner system and see if it starts. Heavy smoke at light loads on any diesel usually means it's starved for air. Mr. mouse may have been busy making a nest blocking air flow..

Thank you for your reply. The air filter system is removed at the manifold. Right now, excessive smoke is not the problem. It won't fire at all.

The only pressure adjustment in the injector is done with a shim. I'm thinking that with 1300 hours the shim and spring is probably ok. I was more concerned with how the injector sprayed. The nozzle holder body, retaining nut and joint nut were torqued to the specified torque when I reassembled. Maybe I should bring the injectors to a injection shop?

When you say you "took the injectors apart" just what are you meaning??? IF you took them 'completely" apart then they would need to have the pop off pressure reset on an injector test unit. IF you just took the nozzles off and cleaned them you SHOULD be OK. Injectors are not some thing the average mechanic can take apart and clean in the common shop.

I am leaning towards your taking them apart messed them up. So either the pop off pressure is way too high that they will not fire or is so low that the injector will not atomize the fuel.

That's the Iseki engine if I recall, indirect injected. Usually those injectors open between 1500-2000 PSI on the poptester. Hopefully put them together right, some injectors have intermediate plates that if turned over STOPS fuel flow to the nozzle tip, which can cause pump damage. Had a set from a Shibura/Ford awhile back that needed the tips replaced, had scored needle valves in them.
