1650 OLIVER Gas Tractor

Have a 1650 Oliver that I bought this late winter. It will only start if the throttle is in the very lowest idle setting. Will not start with a quarter throttle or anything above that. Have 8 tractors at this time and all the gassers need some throttle to start--except this Oliver.
Is something wrong or is this just how this particular tractor operates....

For a cold start on mine I'll give it some throttle and full choke, usually it will fire up immediately. When starting the engine warm I don't give any throttle and no choke.

Might take a look at the ignition system.

Weak cranking spark can cause that, worn plugs, bad wires, etc.

Also a dragging starter, low CCA battery, small battery cables, can sap the voltage away from the coil.

A closed throttle reduces compression, allows the engine to turn faster and easier, making for a hotter spark.

Or it could just be the nature of the carb. If it runs well otherwise, the choice is tinker with it or leave well enough alone! LOL

Check the engine timing. I had a pickup like that once- turned out the timing was just on the ragged edge of being able to run.

When the throttle is closed or at idle that is creating the most vacuum on the carburetor to pull the fuel to start. Check for vacuum leaks and maybe go through the carburetor.

Sounds normal for an Oliver. I'd lean toward maybe a vacuum leak if you think it's worse than any of my gassers.

I might add,my 66 and 77 have to be at a dead idle and no choke. On the 1550 and 1600,I have to bump the throttle just a hair and choke them.

My 1550 gas was like that until I saw the flapper on the choke wasn't going all the way shut, adjusted the choke cable and now just pull the choke and it fires right up.
