I have an ancient wheel disk, and one wheel was cancerous. Yesterday I broke the wire bead getting the old tire off the bad wheel. Found another 15" tire in the barn and dreaded putting it on because it was stiff and hard as a rock. Got the wheel welded up and painted and needed a new tube, so today I stopped at a local tire shop and told the guy my story. "Just a minute" - he left and came back carrying what looked like a brand new tire and tube. I thought he'd misunderstood me - I only wanted a tube. He said this new tire was damaged putting it on the wheel and we can't sell it - you can have it for free. Just a slight tear on the bead was the damage - old wheel has to have a tube anyhow, and I only put 20 lbs of air in the tires. He charged me $14 and change for the tube, and I left him a nice tip for the good service. That old disk is gonna look funny with that brand new tire on it.
I'll certainly go back to that shop when anything else around here needs new tires.
