I'm Surprised

I went out to look at my peach trees this evening when I got off work to check the blossoms. There are quite a few blossoms that did not get damaged by the 16? we had last week here in Highland, IL. There won't be any apricots though that's for sure. They all got it. But that's the first fruit tree to bloom. They were finished blooming before the cold snap hit. How's everyone else's peaches look?

trees covered with blossoms in mid Tenn. but the trees are old time West Virginia peaches we brought down.

Our peach buds are pretty tight yet, - no pink (central N.J.)so we think they are OK despite mid-teens last week and this morning. Nevertheless the persistent warmer temps in southern N.J. have pushed their bud stage further along than us. The difference in climate between the north and the south of Jersey is tremendous.

My daughter's peach tree in south-central MN isn't doing much yet, certainly no blossoms. She had a great crop from it two years ago but nothing last summer. As for me, I've decided that "you can raise peaches in Minnesota" is all part of that great hoax family that includes "sure you can get a good cell signal here" and "if you like your doctor you can keep him." I've tried Reliance and Contender varieties (both supposedly Minnesota-bred and cold-hardy) in east-central Iowa and south-central Minnesota going back many years. I've tried heavy soil, sandy soil, sheltered locations, north slopes, south slopes, heavy mulch, no mulch, etc. Either they never even leafed out the first year or they struggled along for maybe three or four feeble years before conking out. I think maybe one year I got a few blossoms on one tree, but they never developed. If these varieties were developed by the University of Minnesota as claimed, it comes as a surprise that the U of M has a research facility in central Georgia. :0

Hi, my cots and peaches are still a ways off from bloom. We haven't had any weather that would affect them for a while. Sometimes we get a frost in bloom that may effect the lower branches. But I have 14 varieties that spread the bloom a day or 2. Feel bad for you when frost gets you. I still have a lot to prune. Ed Will Oliver

Our peach trees have been blooming for 2 week now have been having low temps in the 30s in 5000 ft elevation in Az. Have covered our two trees the last few years it seems to work as we have an abundance of fruit while people that don't cover get no fruit. We will see.
