John Deere 2320 oil filter

A little over a year ago I purchased a 2012 2320 from a neighbor. The neighbor had just changed oil and filter so I didn't change oil until yesterday. The problem that I ran into was that I couldn't get the new oil filter to stop leaking. The manual says to tighten 1/2 turn after seal makes contact. Instructions on filter says to tighten 2/3 turn after seal makes contact. Nothing I did would stop the leak, about a drip a second.

Went to JD dealer and got a different filter same part # as one I took off and same as the new one I had originally installed. Tried second new filter, same thing. Cuss words are becoming quite common by now. I call tech support. I explain everything to him and mention that I can see many machine marks running across the surface on the block and am wondering if this is the problem. He asked me several questions then said I don't have an answer for your problem but will check and call you back if I come up with something. He returned call in about 20 minutes and said he found one other similar problem and the solution was to hand tighten filter till it made contact then tighten it between 30 and 60 degrees further. This is like about 1/8 of a turn.

It seems like it solved the problem. I am going to check another filter brand and see if it is similar to JD filter which I can remove the seal simply by lifting it off with no effort. I am very nervous about running this tractor with such a loose filter.

If any of you have any comments or have had the same problem please tell me what you did.

With some common sense just tighten it till it quits leaking and run it. It will be fine. If those marks are on the surface where the filter sets that is probably how it will have to be till it is refaced.

I don't know what all he asked you, but,is the stud that the filter threads onto loose? I have always hand tightened my filters including the large diesel engines I used to work on before retirement. Over the years I have seen some leaks, and also I have removed some that were so loose I did not need a wrench, yet they did not leak. Most common cause of leak was loose stud, which causes the filter to loosen. Most common cause at filter change was the old gasket stuck to the base, not coming off with the filter.
If it were to leak after using it,tighten it up.And observe it closely, but I would bet you would catch a leak before major oil loss.Mark
