Found another 3 pt ballast using a 55 gallon barrel on build-it yourself. Hoping this may be helpful if anyone is considering making a rear ballast. geo
barrel ballast

I have made them like this before and I would make a hitch on the back too. The brake drum set up had a lot of merit,,but stack them and make a 3pt hitch added to them, stacking 2-3 welding them together ,,the concrete would still fill the voids and the steel would keep it study. there is no problem finding plenty of brake drums..

Do not like that design because it will result in a pulling load on the draft control linkage. Center the drawbar in the barrel.

I think the two plastic pipes were to hole the metal in place while the
concrete sets up.

I like to go to build-it yourself just to see what others come up with.

JMOR,
How is that any different than having a bale spear on 3 pt. Wouldn't a bale of
hay also result in a pulling load on draft control linkage? Wouldn't most
things you lift with 3 pt put a pulling load?

Most new tractors don't have draft but I see the point JMOR made.

Larger tractors do but most CUTS and all SCUTS do not.

I specified draft control (optional) for my Kubota L6060. I probably would not do it if doing it over.

hose all do & they break the Ns. They were designed for plowing where the top link was normally under compression , pushing into the draft control plunger & spring. That put the load on the spring, not the plunger rod. Yep, I have broken a few & now I weld plates to disable draft & stop breaking draft plunger links at $100 per pop.

How many N really need ballast? How many
use N with loader? I do see Jessies point.
I made a 1200# ballast for neighbor so he
can lift large bales of hay with his big
Massey.

Tim,
Here is one that is built with a ball on back and the guy used plywood for a concrete form. More like something I would build because my welding skills are second to last place.
