OT What do landscapers pay for grass seed?

Looking at some prices for grass seed, about $72 for a 50 lb. bag of Kentucky 31 at Lowe's or Home Depot. Holy cow. That's a quite jump in the last few years. I have to wonder ... what do the landscaping contractors pay for grass seed compared to what retail customers pay ?

More than you think. Not sure how pics will come
out?

I work for a seed supplier. The companies cost has almost doubled in the past 2 years. I bought some back in the winter and had to give around $55 for it. I've seen the local Tractor Supply store have it for $48 I think. That is cheap compared to the bag of Orchard grass I bought to go with it. $160/ 50#.

I'm curious, why did their cost go up?

$54.95 at Orschleins, about the same at TSC.

I always buy grass seed in the fall when it's on clearance.

More than likely cost only went up a little; profit went up a lot. That's the order of business now.

I clean and sell fescue and fescue orchardgrass mix. The largest
demand has been for the mixed seed. I was offered $1.00 per
pound to wholesale this year, but I turned that down.
Our great state of ky for what ever reason has changed the way
orchardgrass is tested. It has to be cold tested even for farm
use. It is very difficult for old strains of orchardgrass to
cold test with a high enough germination to label for retail
sale. Even though the seed germinate just fine, they cannot
tolerate the freezing required for cold testing. This has forced
most seed companies to coat the seed to help increase
germination.
Another reason for the higher price is a lot of the cleaners were
put out of business from the Monsanto lawsuit, some years ago.

I don't ever use K31, I use the mixtures some similar to jay's picture. I'll buy 2000# in 50# bags of a fancy bluegrass/ryegrass blend and I have
to give over $2 a pound.
