Engine running cool

03' ram 3.7L. New thermostate, fan clutch, didnt change a thing. When its cold out like today 10 deg the engine won't warm up to normanl
operating temp. Every time the trany kicks out of over drive the engine temp drops fast to the point of blowing cool air. This is the second napa
thermostat in two years and nothing has changed. I dont think a factory termostate would make a differance altho i am about to try one.
Couldn't be the w/p cause it never over heats. Any suggestions? I have the radiator half covered with card board and it still has a hard time
keeping warm. Even at 30 deg. Changing the fan clutch didn't help any thing. Can't figure it out.

Had an 81 F 100 like that. Changed the thermostat, water pump, thermostat again, finally a factory thermostat which helped a little, and then covered the radiator 3/4 of the way up with heavy plastic. The plastic was the only thing that worked. I drove that truck for 20 years like that and it never overheated even with temps in the high nineties. Good luck!

That is a strange symptom.

Are there any hoses going to the thermostat housing above the thermostat or to the same radiator tank as the upper hose?

If so, possibly the thermostat is being bypassed. If that is the case, check the routing of the hoses, make sure everything is correct.

If that all looks good, I would try a factory thermostat. It is possible the ones from NAPA came from the same source, would explain getting more than one bad.

The 3.7 and 4.7 are known for trapping air an air bubble - especially when swapping the thermostat. They have an air bleed on the upper coolant fitting (?). The 3.7 and the 4.7 both run extremely hot and any issue with the coolant system can easily result in blown head gaskets and warped heads.

Hello old560,

Check the radiator cap. Pressure is needed to circulate the coolant. Maybe its not tight enough, or just bad. Pressure is also needed to remove air pockets from the cooling system,

Guido.
