INTERNATIONAL 424 OR MASSEY FERGUSON 165

Okay guys I have to choose one for an engine rebuild. Which one would you choose? This would be a secondary backup tractor for my MF-290 and Ford 861.

I rebuilt a 424 out of frame back in "89 that had to have the crank, etc. and it was an easy build.
Never dealt with a 165 Ferguson.

Of the two tractors you're looking at the MF165 is 52ish PTO hp and the 434 is 40ish PTO as per tractordata.

I think the MF165 is a fine tractor, Perkins diesel (assuming it is a diesel), lots of parts and Internet forum support.

Good luck,
Bill

The IH 424 tractor was not great when brand new. The MF 165 is a much better tractor. I would also say much more durable too.

(quoted from post at 00:06:10 02/27/17) AD4.203 is the only diesel in the US market, other two engines are gas. UK market did get the AD4.212 diesel though.

Interesting...........I really love the motor in this tractor. Very efficient and plenty of good power.

Yes the 165 is definitely a more durable machine. I like the little 424 but the 165 is definitely where I am leaning.

I had two international tractors when I started farming and none since. The first was a small, letter, Farmall and the second a 4 year old 464
gasser. Was not happy with either and there have been many MF and Fords in my corral since and 2 Fords still here.

(quoted from post at 03:22:02 02/27/17) Have you compared the price of the two engine rebuild parts?

No I have not. I have a feeling the commonality of the 165 would make it a bit cheaper.

Do you already have these tractors, or are you looking to buy the tractor?

If you are looking to buy the tractor, why does it have to be A or B? Can't you keep shopping and find one that doesn't need an engine rebuild?

I own them both proudly.

While I like IH tractors in general and don't have much use for an MF in this case I'd have to flip and say do the 165. Just a better tractor IMO. IMO IH never built a really great utility type tractor. Make no mistake, some were good but they never were as good as most of the COMPARABLE MF or Ford utility tractors.
