Odd barnyard factoid

You would think I've been farming long enough to know the rather odd things one should know, but this one took me by surprise.

So, one of my favorite things this time of year are those big bags of ruby red grapefruit. I eat a couple a day. Apparently one should not throw that many peels in the chicken coop. You want to talk about INSTANT stop to egg production - that will do it. It also causes them to lose LOTS of their short underfeathers. I went out there and got literally one egg from a coop that gives four dozen a day and the ground looked like it had snowed. I couldn't figure it out. I got to thinking and the only thing that had changed was the scrap bowl had all of those peels. They usually go to the hogs, but I sold out so the chickens get it all. I googled it about five days ago and read on one of those backyard chicken blogs that you shouldn't give them citrus. I always have, but just not in that quantity I guess.

Well, I guess it worked cause I got 10 eggs out tonight, up from just one yesterday. Bizarre.

While I was reading your story I thought you were going to tell us the chickens were affected the way grapefruit affects me. I thought you were going to tell us they got 'loose'.

I didn't know citrus cut chickens production down like that. We don't have chickens now but I thought you could throw about anything to them without any ill effects.

Grapefruit have some properties that other fruit don't. One thing folks should be aware of is that grapefruit can interfere with how your body processes other chemicals and you should not eat grapefruit when you take certain medications.

It didn't seem to cause the large feathers to drop, just the downy ones. I actually started putting new wire on the coop because I was sure
something had gotten in and was killing them and eating the eggs. I've never seen them drop so many feathers all of the sudden - even on
groups I kept through molt. The acidic grapefruit must have really message with their body pH.

I was told I couldn't eat grapefruit when I started a statin drug for cholesterol. So I quit the statin drug.

I never heard the work "factoid" until 5-6 years ago. Is that a new term or was I just ignorant?

we had 25 chickens that free ranged, one day in particular the birds were all spread out and pecking away when all of a sudden one would start running from point a to point b as fast as they could and all 25 of them would do it with no rhyme or reason

they did this for 2 days they would go back in the coup normal at night but during the 2 days they run around like their heads were cut off
my wife tells me later she had given them stale sugar coated cereal couple days before........

Same here. Sure miss half a grapefruit for breakfast. Lions Club used to sell a truck load or two every winter. I was good for a case all by myself. Statins su--.
