Just bought a new battery for the a today. The electrolyte in the cells is just above the plates. Should I fill it up with distiller water to the full mark? Don't know if,it was under serviced or if that's the way they come.

Hello craig45,

Charge the battery first as the electrolyte level may change. Then you can top off with distilled water as needed,

Guido.

I would put it into service first, let it come up to full charge like Guido said.

As long as the plates are covered it will be OK. I have found on tractors, off road, marine, anything that gets a lot of vibration or pounding, that leaving the level a little low helps keep the top of the battery dry and cleaner, less cable corrosion.

I have always thought water should always be above those plates. seems as though walmarts batteries more so than others. not sure why. I have seen that before. I always fill them up with distilled water then charge the battery. I also have found out that if you put an automatic charger on them the batteries will last a lot longer. especially in an unheated place. People rend to forget about there batteries in the winter because they don't use there tractors much. batteries aren't cheap anymore.
