im just supposing here, but i have a john deere 850 2wd, it has something like 23 or 24 hp, there is a 950 in the tractor house adds ,and their claiming 32 or so, i dont have it here with me, now, i contract mow in the summer with a ford jubilee and a 5 foot brush hog, or a 6 foot finish mower, all work fine but is there a way to turn up the 850's engine to the 950's power? what im thinking about is fuel savings the 850 will run a 8 hour day on the same amount of gallons the ford burns in 3 hours, if i could get the 850 to handle the mowing, id get more money in my pocket from the same job due to less fuel burned, or am i all wrong?

Renter has an 850 with a 6' finishing mower, it's been a good little machine, but NO power steering and NO live PTO, and only one remote hydraulic circuit, a very basic tractor by today's standards. (I believe PS WAS a factory option, though.)

As to overfueling an 850, they have a 1.3L engine and the 950 has a 1.7L engine, so there IS a basic engine difference.

850 is on the left.

ok thanks thats what i needed to know, i wasnt sure if the power ratings were for the same engine or not, 850 has been a good little tractor has p/s and loader with a add on backhoe, which beats a shovel, but sure isnt a commercial backhoe

Those were under rated from the factory. Have you tried it on the mower ? Our model 750 was rated at only like 18hp ? but on a dyno it made like 24 hp.

This is expanding on what Bob said, but the more hydraulic oil your tractor is pumping, the more fuel you're burning. Any time you run your tractor, you're wasting fuel if it just sits there, as the hydraulic pumps are pumping, but only oil circulation is being accomplished. When using the tractor, if the only hydraulics you're using is power steering, then there is still a waste of used power as the pump is still in full operation. Engine powers the pump, pump charges the lines, relief valves return oil to the reservoir.

I used to have a Pasquali 986 tractor (little Italian job) that had no power steering or brakes - only the 3-pt lift for hydraulics. It was a 21hp, 1-cylinder diesel and had about a 2-gal fuel tank. I once went about 2 days of using a 5' brush hog to mulch up a lot of downed tree limbs that were piled up. Didn't need to have the engine RPM's up high, so was slightly above idle. About 2 good days of running on 1 tank of fuel!! (a little over 8 hours total, if I remember correctly)

Many modern tractors are all-hydraulic. So, all the time that they are running, they are working at the full capacity of the engine RPM's. Not very efficient, but very easy to operate and simplified engineering.

I mowed with a 5 foot rotary and a 6 foot finish mower for 28 years with a JD 750. You'll have no problem power-wise with the 850 in stock form.
