the golden rule

JD SELLER post got me thinking of the old saying "Those with the gold - rules" Why would some old guys buy "OVER" priced land? Because they want to and can! I had a 90 + year old farmer buy an old DC Case from me a few years ago. His family ran a lot of ground. Why did he buy it? Because he wanted too. Same reason he owned a new truck.

Why does anybody buy anything beyond food, clothing and shelter? Everything else in life is not a need but a want.
I think it's described in our Declaration of Independence as... The Pursuit of Happiness---

Older farmer was talking about the truck he just bought and it was fancy he was always careful with his money and he thought he bought to nice of a truck. I told him in all the years of farming he had worked hard and had little time for enjoyment i told him he had all the right in the world to enjoy it . It wasn't long after that he passed away his one kid took and went through that hard earned cash as fast he could .The truck when he passed he said i needed a new truck and i got it i think about him every day and greatly appreciate the gift its helped me out alot.
He also taught me one other thing he said he liked to give money to people when he was still alive and see what they would do with it.
So anymore i tell people enjoy your life .

I put a used automotive hoist in my farm shop and almost everyone who see's it says "Arn't you kind of old to be doing that". I'm 66 and still doing pretty well.

It's not like you can take your savings to the next life. My great grandpa farmed till he was 88. He didn't buy any land when he was 70. But he did buy a brand new JD 4020 when he was 80. Traded in a 830 he bought 4 years before. Wonder if there was any guys back then lambasting him buying a tractor when he was "old". I would think we would all like to live that long and still be healthy enough to not only farm but have the money to justify and buy a brand new tractor.

Next time someone says something like that, ask them if you should instead get "under" the engine with bottle jacks?

Yes licence everything paid for 2002 gmc high Sierra 1200 miles . i used to stop in at least once a week and visit remarkable man amazing life and i really miss sunday visits .

Friend of mine put in a step parlor several years ago and now seasonal milking it works and he's 71.
The step parlor is basically the cow steps up 1 step and you step down one his cows gather behind him and walk into the stalls and are let out through the front. He kept his cost down by using the original milkhouse and then its basically four milking stantions.
I seen a couple set ups at pasture walks that were simple sheds and one was just plastic and with seasonal milking and shutting down during the cold spells they worked . One side benefit calves are like the beef short term headache and then easy going . It's fun watching calves on group feeders someone always is thinking my neighbor has got a better deal.

Yup....my gift to myself for a good year financially and heathwise....new truck, trailer and 2011 Deere....

I think 'overpriced' is used instead of the term 'new price' on things including land many times. There has been a huge infusion of money into the US financial system since the economic problems back in
2008 and its mostly been held by the banks and put into the stock market when it starts to flow into the mainstream economy thru bank loans and sale of stocks think we'll see a lot of new high priced records set.

I dont know if it applies,,but think of an auction,,we bid on a box of miscellaneous stuff. We stop bidding because we think its too high.Someone buys it,,when the runner brings it to the guy that bought it and drops it on the ground,,you will see the buyer rummage through the box of junk till he finds something good to show that the box of junk was well worth the price....same with the guy buying land,,he paid for it and somehow he will justify buying it. The bottom line is ,highest bidder gets the item,,you had your chance ,now shake his hand and wish him well.

Ha! When they get to be 66 they will realize WHY you bought. So you DON'T HAVE TO crawl under the cars and trucks anymore. Lol!!!!!

(quoted from post at 19:55:47 02/23/17) If I can swing it , I plan to build a new dairy barn when I turn 60 . Guess I am just as bad as the guys that bought the farm JD rented . It is just business .

Bruce, when you are getting the dirt work done be sure to run a bunch of extra pipes between your new barn and your house. They can't put certain different types of wires together in the same pipe. You will probably need fiber-optic for your video feeds to your house, and the milking equipment controls that run to your laptop in your bedroom will probably need to be in a dedicated pipe.

If you have the money and want it--then buy it. You don't have to justify it. How does the guy buying the new boat, or snowmobile justify it? Simple answer is, he can't. As long as you don't owe me any money, I don't care what you spend it on.

Clint Eastwood said in his Playboy interview years ago "A lot of folks are old before their time because they think old". Have always remembered that and I think there is something to it. I am 68 and still play with tractors, work in my shop, and mountain bike. Plan to keep doing all until I can't.
