OT--USPS money order

I have a Farm Tractor part for sale on CL. I have a person in another state that wants to purchase and pay with USPS money order. Item is priced at $400.00 and I will ship after payment clears.
I have talked to the interested person and trust them to be legit.
How does this Payment system work and How safe is a USPS money order?

100% safe. The money has already been paid to the PO. I suppose there are a few cases of forged MO's but not very many. Once you get cash in hand it is yours. I think that the buyer is probably at a bigger disadvantage with trusting you to ship once payment has been sent. As far as I know there is no way to void a money order.

Correct!

I have used them for years with no problems. Just take the money order to the post office. Show ID and they cash it.

Postal money orders are probably one of the safest types of payment out there. Actually
much safer than Cashiers Checks which are possible to forge. Scammers don't want to deal
with Postal Money Orders because any fraud involves the Federal Government due to the
Postal connection and the consequences are much stiffer.

If you receive a counterfeit USPS money order whoever sent it is committing mail fraud (a federal offense). If you receive a USPS money order, and do not ship the item you are committing mail fraud (a federal offense). This is as told to me by a friend of mine who has been working for the USPS for many, many years. It's the best way to pay for something if only a check, or money order can be used for payment. For a personal check from either the same bank, or a different bank than yours it's best to check with your bank as to how long it takes to clear before shipping. A USPS money order is usually the safer, quicker way to go.

As they said 100% safe IF it is a real postal money order. Take it to your bank prior to shipping the item. The bank can tell if it is real. Forging one is a federal offense and all but the dumbest of crooks know that and dont mess around with USPS money orders.

I don't agree they can and have been counterfeited. Bank fraud is a federal issue too. Take it to the post office see if they can cash it, if so you should be good. A bank may put it through like a check and 2 weeks later you get hit with an issue. Be ware of overpayment on item and you send some back etc.

Learned something today,I never knew you could cash one at the PO. I just took 3 to my bank last week. I always ask them to verify them. Depending on the teller they ether hold them up to the light and say Yup its good or go ask another employee, there are water marks in them same as paper currency.

You may have to go to a main post office for that as the smallest may not have enough cash on hand to do it. A small local post office the last I heard was only open for limited bussiness for 2 hours a day. Mostly kept open for the town residents that have their mail box in the post office. I go to a full size office 7 mile away that is my mailing address.
