John Deere MX 10 Brush Hog

I have a buddy who had some bad luck today with his John Deere MX 10 Brush Hog. Broke the shaft out of one of the gear boxes that attaches to the stump jumper. Deere wants $1700 for a new gear box and $1410 to rebuild his gear box. Is there any after market parts for his gear box?? Anyone know where to buy a new gear box without the green paint? Don't know the serial number of the brush hog or the part number of the shaft.

Just trying to help my friend. Thanks.

I see there are verious different specs under this same model #. One says medium duty, for 30-60hp. Another says heavy duty and for 50-80 hp.

What hp tractor does your friend use? Agri-Supply (for example) has 75 hp gearboxes for up to $180 each. If it were me, I'd get a gearbox rated for 30 or so hp more than I'm using and replace both gearboxes with aftermarket.

Now for another question - is his cutter still under any kind of warranty?

Actually, there was another they had for up to 100 hp for $200:

Your friend would have to make sure all the parts match up ahead of time. There may be some JD-only parts on the underside that won't hook up to anything but a JD gearbox.

Not under warranty. Has two sets of blades on it. It
is 10 feet wide so both gear boxes have to be the
same. I am beginning to think this may be a Deere
only fix. Thanks.

The parts to fix his gear box will not cost anywhere near $1400. I just did one this summer and the shaft/seals and the one bearing was only $700-800. Usually not all the bearing are hurt. Post the gearbox casting number and his cutter's serial number and I can look up the parts. Many times the shaft is all that is hurt. So just shaft and the bottom seal.

Thanks for the reply. The $1400 price was for parts and labor from a JD dealer. I will have him text the numbers tomorrow. Thanks again.

its like that show gold rush where those drive belts were smoking on that conveyor that gearbox that drives it is most likely a size 5 dodge gearbox we pull them off and rebuild them when the bearings get worn out there not that bad of a job once you do one and get the hang of it.and its a fraction of the cost of buying a new one.

I have a different philosophy on gear box rating vs. tractor size (hp). I would rate the gearbox
SMALLER than tractor HP. That would possibly provide some extra protection for the tractor's
internal pto. etc. Sure seems to me it would be cheaper to replace a gearbox or two than having
to do deep surgery on tractor.

There is an ebay vendor that sells updated shafts plus the bearings and seals .

Cost might be so high as John Deere would have to buy the parts from Bush Hog???????I don't think JD has bought Bush Hog.

A properly adjusted slipclutch should protect both.
