Honda generator

Mystery solved.

About a week ago my portable generator was giving me fits. It would run 30 seconds and die. On a bit of advice I changed the spark plug since it was probably original. It fired right up and ran great.

The one that was reccomended was a BPR5ES the one I took out was a 6 so for Ngk plugs which is hotter?

I believe the lower number is hotter...ie 5. I run BPR5ES in all my small engines...I have a lot of hondas. It seems kind of crazy since we can go 100-150,000 km without changing the plgs in the new viehicles, but I have no issue switching a new plug once or twice a year. While the engines may be ok, a new plug smooths the starts and gives good power.
Don't worry, I change the filters and oil often too. Lots of crude mnages to get in the carb bowls to fowl things up too...I blame dirty gas cans.

I went through that with a Kawasaki lawn mower a few years back.

It might run 15 minutes, spluter and die, start right back up one pull. Run 5 minutes, do it again. Run fine the next 3 times I used it.

$100 worth of ignition module, coil, chasing every theory known...

Replaced the perfect looking spark plug, problem solved, lesson learned!

Yes, the NGK plugs, lower numbers are hotter.

Next time you are at a hardware store, buy yourself a funnel with the brass, ultra fine mesh filter screen in the bottom. Galvanized steel funnels have it locally...Gebler brand I believe.

A fellow brought me a string trimmer that would not run. I replaced the rotted out fuel lines and changed the spark plug. It started right up, but simply would not run right. I fooled with it for a couple of weeks off and on. Just on a hunch, I put the old spark plug back into it. Problem solved. Brand new Champion spark plug right out of the box was no good.

The BPR5ES plug is for the smaller engins of 5hp and less. 5he BPR6ES goes in the 8hp and up engines. Also was use in all of The water cooled engines on VW Dashers,Rabbits, etc form 1975 and up. On my big 22hp Vtech twin cylinder engines I use the palladium plugs with the same heat range. They run fantastic. You also want to run your generator with hi-test gas. Keeps the govenor from hunting.
