The 8n I am working on had a 3 wire alternator and when I plug up the two wire clip the alternator squeals loud and does not charge. I replaced it with a new one the same way it came off and it will still squeal and not charge when I plug up the two wires. The letters on the alternator are upside down does the top need turning or does matter which way it turns. thanks Tracy

Yes, your alt. must be turning the correct way, but it should have said when you got it if it was clockwise or counter. send me a picture of your setup, I am no stranger to alternators so I will tell you if that one will work, also that is a three wire external regulator alternator, so your regulator could very possibly be bad.

Double check your wiring.

Sounds like it may be wired wrong.

Did the battery wire spark or the battery cable spark when connected? If it did the polarity is backward, if so it damaged the alternator.

It doesn't matter how the rear housing is clocked. It can go any 4 positions for ease of wiring. If you had it off and turned it, the brushes popped out unless you pined them in.

joseph, I'm gonna call "bull excrement" on that, common automotive-style alternators are not rotation-sensitive and will charge equally well in either direction.

Only issue is, for LH rotation the pulley nut may spin off if not tightened securely and/or loctited.

NO squealing or failing to charge, tho.

I am with you Bob, those alternators can charge either direction, and I am no stranger to alternators myself! LOL

Is it a Delco alternator ? If it has an external regulator and has the plug 0n the alternator rear face with the terminals arranged like this, {II}, it may be a Delco DN series with external regulator. If so, the squeal sounds like a regulator problem.

Both the external regulated Delco DN and the internal regulated Delco SI have a 3 wire hookup, so both could be called 3 wire.

What is normally considered to be a 3 wire alternator is the internal regulator Delco SI series, the plug would be on the rear side edge and have the terminals arranged like this {- -}, a long narrow plug, unlike the square plug on the rear face of the external regulator Delco DN alternator.

Thanks for the help. I thought the belt was tight enough but I was able to get it a little tighter and the squealing stopped and the volt meter reads 14 volts with tractor running. Thanks again
