Question for you fabrication guros

I have been working on my 1963 Case 831C tractor this winter. The latest project on it was to build a more comfortable seat for it. I built this framework, weighing a bit less than 20# with armrests and higher back rests.
The problem is that the still original rubber torsion springs have lost their luster, and the seat suspension bottoms out when I plunk my 220# butt on the seat.
I am looking for some coil-over shocks, such as maybe found on a mini-bike or some such, that would offer me support with a ride height pin to pin of about 9".
Can anyone on here point me to a source for such a shock or gas cylinder???

It may be cheaper to just lose weight! Just think you can save on food, have better heart health and it will also be easier on the tractor seat!!

If you are anywhere near a Race Car parts supplier, we used some 11" and 9" shocks with a coil over spring on our race car. A shock has a variety of compression-rebound #'s (50-50, 60-40,40-60 and many others) and has eyes for ends with 1/2" or 5/8" holes. Springs can be had in some very light spring rates to fit the coil overs. Love the work you are putting into making a fine tractor brand even better.

Sir, you fabed up all that metal and it only weights
twenty lbs.
Wow, Somebody in NASCAR is looking for you.
Good job. J

I put an air bag(I think it was intended to go under a truck cab) under the agriking seat on my 770. It made life a whole bunch better. I just use the shop air line to adjust as needed.

Well, I am 6'1" tall and that is my winter weight. during the summer when I am active in the garden and cutting firewood my weight drops to just over 200# Welding doesn't offer much physical exercise during the winter.

Something like this Loren ?

They are a little less than 8" eye to eye and not too pricey

Know anybody at the Ferris factory? They use a bunch of them. I took the small ones off the front of my Ferris, as I didn't think they did much, other than limit the movement of the axle.

I agree with the air bag. Go here http://www.shockerhitch.com/Receiver_Hitch.php and watch the video. It may give you some ideas.

Bob, what did you do with them after you removed them. they might just suit my needs. I have to go down to R Imps. Sat, and I will check out their stock of Ferris mowers. thanks for tip.
By the way, I have lost your phone number. My e-mail is open down on RH lower corner.

I can't help but wonder if the aftermarket makes a complete seat that would of fit right on there ?

Ask Tom loren, someone posted about redoing those using a wd45 shock and spring. I can't remember if that was on the case forum or on Facebook. It looked good and fit right too.

I want to keep it as original as possible. I bought reproduction seat cushions from Speer cushion co. and trying to maintain a factory theme/look to the added back rest, including the color of the custom vinyl cushions that will be fabed for the arm rests and back supports.

They're just siting on a shelf(I think!) I think they're smaller than what you want. The ones on the rear are bigger. They do actually hold the back end up. They're kind of neat, as they have an adjustable collar so you can adjust the spring tension.

Another thing to look at would be in a truck junk yard. You want to get hold of the frame for a Bostrom seat. My dad put one in his school bus and was like sitting on a cloud. Fully adjustable. You put your seat on top of it. There are air ride and hydraulic shock absorber type. You need the later. There are a couple of new bases on ebay with not too high of a price tag. Not real cheep but OHHH what a ride.

you must have a small ferris with front pivot axle because the next one ups are way larger and front axles are similar aframe style on cars, you can not take springs off those it would fall on its face. have shed full those units

Just bolt an old air seat from a truck on there will have all the comfort you want. If those armrests don't flip up for getting out of the seat you will soon hate them. I never flip them down in the truck or on the tractors always in the way.

The arm rests fold up. Trying to somewhat maintain the original look of the tractor, plus I have already invested in new custom cushions from Speer Cushion Co. Also built this 2 post canopy for the tractor and RH and LH front steps, and front bumper/grill guard.

Hi, maybe spring like on an old 8N if you could get it under there. You really wouldn't need all that torsion stuff. Can you buy those rubber torsion things from a jobber. Case got them from some outfit. Ed Will Oliver BC

Ed, we have two great Case parts supplier on the Case forum and the rubber torsion springs are available, but for #20 bucks I found a pair of coil over shocks for a mini bike, as per suggestion here on this post. All ordered and have an extra for another seat.
Thanks guys.

Loren:

". . . the seat suspension bottoms out when I plunk my 220# butt on the seat."

If your butt weighs 220 lbs. , how much does the rest of you weigh? - May need to get OVERLOAD Springs. LOL
