Farm King gear box

Got the Farm King auger gear box opened up today and I can see what went wrong but not sure why. The snap ring that held the lower bearing in
place had come out of the groove. It allowed the bearing to slide down the shaft out of the cone so there was only the upper bearing holding.
So plenty of free play in the shaft to push the seal out of place. Not sure if the snap ring was left out at the factory or if it jumped the
groove during use. Whatever, it looks like a new gear box might be needed. There are tiny cracks appearing in the bevel gear. No doubt due to
running without proper engagement. I don't want to put it back together and have it break.

Do you think that snap ring might have just been weak? Or was it maybe beveled a little bit on the leading edge instead of squared off?

You can also use shim washers on that shaft so even if the ring pops loose the gear can't move. Just a thought.
