I am moving. I have my wife and a child and stuff for a grandchild. I have nearly 1000 books and the usual barn and tractor stuff. I think I have too much stuff. I have filled one of the PODS, 2 16 foot stock trailers, and a 16 foot Uhaul. I have very little in the way of furniture.

Is this too much? If yo moved how much would you have?

Moving is always an opportunity to get rid of stuff. First was a garage sale. We had a rule that what didn't sell didn't go into the moving truck; it went to one of the charities.

Stuff can overwhelm you and become overly important to you. We also had a "use it of lose it" rule; if we didn't use something in a year, we needed a darn good excuse for keeping it.

You just have to get ruthless and dispose of stuff some way. Six months later you won't even remember what you got rid of.

As a collector and a packrat I can't even fathom how many PODS I would need. Fortunately I plan to just move across the road so I can do it in many small bites....

My move cost 41 dollars per hundred pounds. To the tune of 16,000 dollars and I shed all my saved metal that I had. They took lathe ,mill , six motorcycles.

We really were thinking about it 20 years ago. At that time it would have taken a few semi trailers. It's only gotten worse. I honestly stand here some days and wonder why in the world we have all of this stuff. Every Christmas it only gets worse. I understand now why in his later years, when somebody would ask Dad what he wanted for Christmas,he'd say just something he could eat.

I down sized and then also moved about 5 miles from the home place. Took a lot of trips. Now I wish I'd of had an auction and started all over again !

Our move was 20 miles. All my shop stuff and tractor stuff and lawn and garden stuff filled 2 40 ft semi trailers. drove a few tractors with implements and hauled smaller tractors on a 22 ft trailer. Also moved my 45 ft windmill on that trailer. Do I have too much stuff??, ya,just ask my wife. I did get rid of a 14 ft dumpster of misc. stuff and later was looking for things I threw away. Dad always said you don't need it until after you throw it away.

Twelve years ago we moved a dairy herd and full line of farm equipment 850 miles.I do not even want to remember how many semi loads of cattle and machinery we had. I should have had a sale before moving and bought other machinery but we bought the farm in Feb and moved April 15 so not enough time on either end. We did downsize but still moved alot of stuff and we got rid of some stuff we shouldn't have. I hope my next move is the graveyard and then my children can deal with it. Tom

I moved our dairy herd, equipment, house hold furniture, three kids , and wife, back in 2004. Lots of work and planning. Only 25 miles, but as far as the wife and kids we're concerned, it could have been to Mars. Here we are some 13 years later, and everyone loves it. Some things do work out. Lots of luck with your move.

I have saved stuff, sometimes over 30 years, before I needed it..........but finally did. :)

At age 64 in 2011 my wife and i moved 65 miles to our acreage near our home towns. We built a new home 7 miles out in the county. Neither she nor i are hoarders but we have acculumated quite a lot, however they are things that we enjoy, have some value or sentimental value.
Most things are those that support our living in the county.

I have way too much stuff to move, so I ain't movin', and no one can make me. I'll just die right here and let the kids and grandkids sort it out.

if i moved right now, probably 4 or 5 semi trailers , 1/2 of 1 for furniture and house things, nobody around here has money to buy stuff, my equipment came to hard, it cost too much time, money and blood, ill haul it before it give it away around here

When I moved into my current home 39 years ago next month, I said I was never moving again. I didn't have 1/4 as much stuff then as I have now, and I am sticking to my original statement. I'll move when they haul me out in the "meatwagon"!

I moved halfway across the country 8 years ago. 3 loads on a 25' gooseneck with side kit, 2 semi loads, and I think most of the rest will fit in 1 more semi.

Years ago I helped my grandparents move off the farm. They had been working on downsizing for a number of years. Grandmother fit all her things into a large Uhaul. Grandfather filled a 48' box trailer. Worst part is he was halfway through restoring a JD B at the time. Had to reassemble the tractor, just to take it back apart and finish the restoration.

We're really hope to stay on the farm until the end... so the kids can get rid of our crud. :)

BUT if we develop health issues and must move to town - then we'll get rid of A LOT of stuff.

Moving and storing extra "stuff" is time consuming and expensive. I try to sort thru things at least twice before I even start packing. Be ruthless when you sort, get rid of 1/3 each time you sort. Sell or donate the things that have some value. I've found I don't miss over ninety five percent of what I get rid of, and the other five percent I can replace (if it's ever necessary).
