Rain jacket

i have a rain jacket from Schaefer that I really like. It is similar to the yellow ones you see cops wearing but it is nylon. It needs to be scotchguarded to be water proof. I have been having to spray it more and more to keep it waterproof. Are there other scotchguard type products I should consider? I am I doing I my application? Thanks
 
JimS: Here's an article to the old-time formula used on "oil cloth" and similar fabrics. I can't speak for how it would work on nylon, but it might be a starting point for further research. It's the same formula used in many commercial waterproofing formulas, just done in bulk, both for the sake of economy and so you can tweak the formulation to get what works for you. Author is a sawyer and boat builder from Washington State, so he's spent more than a little time in the cold and wet!

I re member reading that the Scotchgaurd formula was changed like 15 years ago. Something to that effect. Not as good. Of course.
 

You want something water proof and tough get some type of oiled/waxed cotton. I got a knock off Australian type coat. That thing never lets water through, is light and tough.

Yupper! Wish I could afford one of those nice Barbour coats from Great Britain, but I've to find one I could stomach paying for.
