How is it possible for all three things to be true?

A marine battery will charge, so no opens internally. Specific gravity reading in all cells the same. 1.25 correcting for temperature. Voltmeter 13.3v. Tester shows BAD CELL. How is it possible for all to be TRUE?
BTY, I think it is possible. So I'm wanting you to explain how YOU think they can all be possible.

Battery is junk.

Had a midtronics at work (GM dealer) and more often than not you better obey it as it was seldom if ever wrong. About all you can use on sealed batteries. How much was your tester ? have they came down in price ? they used to be real expensive.

It's not a short or a dead cell.

The battery has developed a high internal resistance, and can't sustain any sort of load. Under the load of the tester, the overall voltage drops 2.0V or more, which looks like a dead cell to the tester.

Since the tester can't test individual cell voltages, the "dead cell" conclusion is just an assumption. It can't tell the difference between one dead cell and six cells dropping voltage equally.

If I were in charge of this site, I wouldn't tolerate negative post. I would kick BULLIES OFF.

I don't get it, MY POSTS ARE NOT REQUIRED READING.

I bet you have no idea what the answer to my questions is. If you have a clue, please posted it.

I'll give people a day to post their answer, before I post what I think is happening to marine battery.

Oh come on Geo, there was nothing even close to bullying said. That's one thing that's wrong with this country. People take themselves way to seriously and can't take a little good natured ribbing.

But would you tolerate a corroded positive post if your tester supported it's position?

Loren, I wouldn't want anyone to lose sleep over my post, so here is the answer to how all three things can be true at the same time. I concluded there has to be something wrong with plates in deep cycle marine batteries. Then I did some research and this is what I found.

Major modes of failure of deep-cycle batteries are loss of the active material due to shedding of the plates, and corrosion of the internal grid that supports active material.

I knew deep cycle plates are thicker, but I didn't know the plates were prone to failure by shedding. Did anyone??

I will never buy another marine battery for my dump trailer. My lawn mower batteries last longer than marine batteries. I'll use two old car batteries in my dump trailer. Done with marine batteries.
Hope you get your rest.

Enough with the magical battery tester posts, already. Post something about Lady Gaga, or the Russians, or something. Give it a rest.

I have thought about cutting a battery apart and lifting the assembly out of the case, and then try to clean the plates.
The biggest trouble I can see, is sealing it back together again, and yes, I can cut a plastic case without a spark. What say you!

I'm with you. I never knew there were so many things about batteries that I don't care about. As to the, bullying thing, it's about like throwing out the race card, but more like a little kid saying, "I'm telling the teacher what you said about me ". And I know I don't have to read the posts, I just like the drama.

Just because a battery reads over 12 volts doesn't mean it can put out the amps like it's suppose to. You may have one cell that has only one set of plates working inside. The others may have fallen apart and not working. I mean all the material may have fallen off and settled to the bottom.

Look at it this way. A "AAA" battery is small and is 1.5 volts, a "D" cell battery is lots bigger but only 1.5 volts. So your cells in your battery are like this comparison due to something has happened inside your battery.

I doubt that will work. It is like 12 small tanks in a box. You may cut the outside, but then how would you cut the center top walls. Speaking of batteries I sure have had my share of dead batteries this month. Stan

Rescuing a battery is only a "must do thing if you are stranded where no possible rescue can take place and the battery , If Fixed, will save you. They are nasty and corrosive. The plates are often mechanically flaked off, or so sulfated that cleaning is not the answer. Not a recommended solution. Jim

George, you've been here long enough to know you have to have some pretty thick skin to make a post on this site. If you want to post about batteries, go ahead. Don't worry about it!

I have nuttin to grumble about on what you post so lets get that over with :)

About all I can say is if you would have brought a good load tester you could see with your eyes the :WORK: that battery could are could not do and not depend on something to make a guess at it. None of the other gizmo's would be needed you would be satisfied and no second guess needed.

You can not tote a load tester in yer pocket is about the only plus again it.
