A 650 cca battery is rated at 800 can at 32F. The battery I brought was 805 in store.

Another new battery only weighted in at 670. Guess which one I brought?

That's why you take all batterys home and put them on a trickle charger overnight. Gennys and Alternators will not give them a deep charge.
 
Could be a big difference in age as well. I purchased a Group 1 6 volt a couple months ago, and looked closely at date codes, and found a pretty good variance in the date codes. Had to pull a few out and get to the ones in the back to get the newest battery. I believe there were about 10 of the same on the shelves, and only difference was date codes. Be very easy to buy a battery that is a year old, and while the warranty does not start until the purchase date, the deterioration starts the day it is manufactured.
 
I agree with you a 100%, people forget that basic fact and assume batteries are fully charged directly off the shelf.

George's CONDUCTANCE tester doesn't care if the battery is fully charged or not. Nothing like cold, hard facts when you want to make a purchase decision. I'll bet the store manager isn't happy about George bringing his tester into the store, though.

I gotta get me one of those. The counter boys at AutoZero and O'Ripoffly's will have a cow when I test their "new" batteries.
 
Mark, I don't ask. No one said a word. BTW, only date on battery was January 2017. Every battery I buy is tested. Pick the best.

Is there a cheaper alternative to that high dollar tester you have George? I have a cheapy carbon pile tester, but I don't think it does CCAs. I like the idea of what you're doing, at least I think I do. You're testing the batteries plates/storage potential?
