67 shelby found in shipping container. Neat find. I would be excited finding something like that too

Does anyone see what I see? How does a big man get the door open to get inside the car? The next thing that caught my eye is RUST. Is that rust on fenders and door? If the shipping container traps moisture, rust and bet the inside of the car smell moldy.

This confirms it, I'll never use a shipping container for storage.

Think about it. Lets say the car is about 6 ft, the trailer about 8 ft, door opens about 2 ft.

Was that RUST or dirt????

Shipping containers used for storage do just fine. Yes if left at sea they would trap moisture but inland they stay dry. Used one for years at work for record storage never had a problem.

In that article it shows a before and after picture. All it needed was cleaned up. Says it still has the original paint that looks good in the 2 nd pic.

OK is that rust or dirt on car?? If rust it proves my point right?

Yes, it depends on where you live too. Where I live temp swings, humidity swings, I have condensation of concrete floor all the time. Without proper ventilation, I would have rust city.

Mike,
Looked like rust on door. I guess the final test for me would be the sniff test. Does the inside smell moldy?

Brother had a metal shed in Florida. I couldn't stand to be close to it. EXTREME MOLD.

There a lot of factors to consider as to the moisture being trapped.

The most important would be the condition of the container. If the roof leaked, or it was sitting on the ground where it could be flooded, then once the moisture was inside, it likely would be trapped and begin condensing, dripping, rusting, molding, everything moisture normally does.

But if the container was in good condition, especially if it was insulated, still able to seal, up out of the dirt, it should be about as good as you could get for storage. One of the best things about a good container is it is rodent proof.

We have one at the company deer property. It has been a great investment, looking to get another. No moisture problems, it is locked well enough the local druggies have so far given up getting into it, no more rat chewed wiring!

Looks like dirt to me. Container is rusty probably from original use and reason for it being available for a non shipper to purchase.....like 18 wheeler boxes that are past their time. Nowhere in the article did anybody mention rust.....just saw "cleaned it up and..........."

The inside of a shipping container measures 7'9". I had to crib enough of them I wont forget that ever. If the roof didn't leak the rest is far from air tight. Rust shouldn't be an issue

from what i read in the article, the car was stored for only 15 years in the container. also, it was stored at an airport in chico california, which looks like it is north of sacramento , kinda looks like a desert area. prolly really dry there. i'd say it desert dust on the car.

On an offshore oil production platform we had a shipping container for a tool shed. Never had any rust problems with it or it's contents. Can't get a more worse humidity location than 20 miles out in the Gulf.

If you are talking about picture #3 of the slideshow. The "red" spots are not rust or dirt on the door or the hood.

It's HEADLIGHT GLARE from the headlights of the vehicle being used to light the Mustang for the picture.

Notice everywhere else that's lit is kind of yellow, like the door of the container, the woman, the stuff by the fence. It's clearly headlight glare on the dusty black paint.

But you're right, once Geo gets a notion in his head... More shipping containers for the rest of us, I guess.

That not a shipping container but just a semi trailer and they are not as tight as a true shipping container.

I have same wether conditions you got and I dont have moisture on my concrete floor, put plastic down before you pour concrete

That picture is in a trailer, (probably the one the story mentions as being pulled from OK to CA), not the container.

Condensation shouldn't be a problem as those containers are virtually airtight. No inside/outside air exchange = no added moisture to condense. And, it was in the Sacramento area, really dry!

I see lots of dust, no rust.

My shop also get condensation on the floor when weather goes from cold/dry to warmer/high humidity. But, my storage room (really a good tight truck van body) doesn't suffer from condensation issues. Why? Because the storage isn't open to outside air infiltration, while the shop is always opened daily.

No it's a shipping container, look at the blocks for lifting and stacking in the corners. Early ones were in fact constructed very simular to semi trailers rather than the corrugated steel type common today

Two door cars have bigger doors, so when it opens it's still hard to get in.

That said, I'm a big enough boy not to give some on hear a tongue lashing for personal attack. If my morning eyes are bad, I don't see everything. SORRY FOR MY POST.

I'm not going to say, "I DON'T SHIVE A GET" what others say about me personally, gets my meaning?
geo.

Maybe I should have added something that would let you know that what I said questioning your weight was tongue in cheek. I thought you and I both posted on here enough to have a little bit of a mutually joking relationship. I guess not. Sorry for thinking we had that kind of thing going where we could joke with each other. Won't happen again.

rrlund,
My response to you was a response a two door requiring more room to open. I'm not upset if you call me fat. I was overweight, but down to 167#.

The rest of my response was directed at another person who launched a personal attack. I don't really mind having a discussion with anyone who has an opposite view. That doesn't really bother me. Just the opposite. Nothing wrong with having opposing opinions.

Anyone launching personal attacks should be called Bullies. Bullying in this county is out of control. Especially cyberbullying. Not to mention personal attacks is against YT rules.
I'M VERY SORRY IF YOU FELT I WAS ANGRY WITH YOU.
GEO.

I agree with you 200% about the bullying and I could really make this political and what's happening Friday, but I won't.

There's kind of a core group of us on here who I just kind of feel like can poke a little fun at each other and in fact,I'd wonder what was wrong if some of you didn't poke a little fun at me and I hope you feel the same way since I include you. I know I'll leave somebody out,but they'd include you,JDSeller,Kruser,Donald Lehman, donjr,Glenster,RayP(Mi),JWondergem,Royse,Jonf,JDJohn,Loren,Larry the Corner Guy,DaveH(Mi),jm.,Centash,Lee Little and probably a lot more, hate to leave anybody out,but like I said,I look forward to a little good natured ribbing from you guys. I hope you all know I'm just returning the favor when I poke a little fun at you.

I know what you mean Larry. I'm not up there with the number of people who I've met in person that Jonf has,but the list is long. I know for sure that they're all a great bunch and we have a super time when we get together. Like I said, there's a bunch of us who are on here most every day who I know are as great as the many I have met and I have no doubt that if I met them in person,we'd have the same relationship, and I just feel like as much as we know about each other,we already have that connection.

There's always people coming and going and some of them get a little too familiar and think they can say things they shouldn't,but after all these years,I know enough to just ignore them and let it go.

I have personally met many from the site,Frank Whitehead stopped in all the way from Georgia to visit.I have met Adrian Billheimer,Robin Hood, Darrel from PA,FARMER near Lynville,JimG ,alg from nj,,all in person.I have talked to so many on the phone,,Adirondack Case guy,JD Seller,Arizona pea picker,,RayH from Ohio,,Rusted Nuts,,FLOLDFORD(Gary),,and more,,,all some of the nicest people I have ever met. This site is a great thing,,,much ,,much more than old tractors.

The Sea Lands were not made like the containers we have now, they did not have vents(they invented the concept of lift off containers.) The reason I was told why they moved the extra lights, were from overheating from the blocked radiator.
