So all we were gonna do was an oil change on daughters Taurus... before we let the car down, I'm checking things out.
Grab the left front tire...oh-oh...got slop...bad wheel bearing....**%&$!!**!...get the knuckle off, old bearing out, send daughter to parts store, install bearing in knuckle, try to compress brake caliper to put back on....What the ?!?!?!?...it won't budge... determine it's the hose, getting late, I gotta work day shift (get up at 4)tomorrow.
So daughters car will be on the lift till about Wednesday.

All we were gonna do was change the oil

That's about how "The oil needs to be changed on the combine" goes. Or "I need to grease this baler". Or "I wonder if that electric fence is grounded out on anything". I digress.

Neighbor's daughter, college educated, good city job, told her dad she was having engine problems. He checks the dipstick and no oil. Pulls the drain plug and no oil. Pulls the filter and it's clogged. He asked her.....have you ever changed the oil......answer......"The What???????"

Not sure about fords, but some gm calipers require a rental tool to compress. My son bought a new caliper, and all he needed was the tool.

On my sons Ford Mustang, you have to turn the piston inside the caliper as you compress the piston. Otherwise, it will not compress!!

I always did my daughters car repairs. Brother and I talked about putting in a lift. Probably wouldn't happen now. Both of us getting too old to justify one now. 20 or so years ago all the under lift hoists had to be removed because of possible ground contamination. Back then the hoists were easy to find. Stan

I never could see putting fresh oil in a dirty filter full of dirty oil. Next I never knew if the filter was clogged to the point where the bypass valve would be open and no filtration would take place. So I always did filter and oil.....it's t teddy bear thing to me. Sleep better at night.

(quoted from post at 19:22:27 01/15/17) Please explain why you change oil and not the filter? Not being sarcastic just asking. Thanks.

Manufacturer's recommended service maybe? Since changing the filter is usually easy, most of us can get a warm fuzzy feeling that we are going above and beyond by changing it every time.

I do know that alot newer cars (last 10 years or so) have calipers that need the special too to screw the piston back in instead of just pushing back in but i think its only on the rear disc as it has something to do with parking brake
