ok passed on the 2004 f250 with 185000miles ,,now looking at 1997 f250 4x4,,5.4 engine with 105000 miles new rad and all brake lines new,,no rust but paint peeling on cab how in can fix that ,,locking hubs,,auto trans, anything to look out for on this one thanks cdv

II do not know if that engine has cam advance, but if so, listen for it to be noisy on front of engine.
Smooth shifting transmission and no burnt fluid
Spark plugs?

Check also the brake hardware. Here in the northeast - where deicing salt is used about 6 months a year - the F250 is notorious for stuck caliper pistons and slider pins.

No rust and all new brake lines? Something doesn't sound right. Make sure that E40D trans is working right since at 105K miles - it might be due to fail if its been worked hard. Also make sure the front brake rotors aren't cracked (a weak spot).

Is it titled as a 97 or a 98? 97 wouldn't have had a 5.4 engine and if it is a 98 then it will most likely be a 7 lug F250 which is basically just an F150 with a slightly beefier suspension and axle with the same drivetrain as an F150. 1998 was a transition year from the square body trucks to the super dutys. No diesel option that year

I beg to differ with you but I owned a 97
with a 5.4 in it. Put a 100,000 miles on it.
Yes it was just the heavy half ton, it was a
work horse.

A 97 F250 with a 5.4 in it would be a "heavy half" with the new 1/2 ton body. Also has 7, yes 7 bolt rims.

I remember when a customer bought one of those. The local truck equipment company would not put a snow plow on it, because it would have made the truck over the maxim weight of the truck. I almost forgot, he did have a utility body on it too.

Run away from that 5.4 as quick as you can. With those miles- We take them straight to the auction. The boss is a huge ford man. He will not put them on the lot.

(quoted from post at 04:33:26 01/16/17) must be the light duty 1997
there were two models of that year of 250 s......heavy duty and light duty.

The "heavy duty" F250 in 1997 was the square body and would have had a 351W, 460, or 7.3L diesel.

The 5.4L was only available in the light duty 1997, which isn't much beefier than an F150.
