7.3l Ford problems

I finally have time to work on this thing again. It's a2001f250 with the 7.3L. I changed the oil,oil filter and fuel filter. Cycled the key a few times to fill the fuel bowl back up and started it. It ran good for about 5 minutes than it acted like the fuel was gelling. It gradually lost cylinders until it quit running. The hpop is full of oil. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and cam position sensor. None of the fuses are blown. I unhooked the injection pressure sensor and still nothing. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Mine did that once and the new fuel filter lid gaskets were shaped differently and leaking. Put the old gaskets on the new lid and it worked.

Did you change the fuel filter on the frame rail. Filling the fuel filter on the engine takes a fair amount of flow, and it could have possibly carried a batch of water/dirt to the Frame mounted filter. clogging it. Running at idle it would take about 5 min to empty the engine mounted filter, and if no fuel can be pumped to it would give you a no start condition

not to knock diesels because i bought a 06 duramax brand new i never had alot of trouble with it but some.reasons like this is why i will never own another diesel pickup.way to many headaches for me and most of them are expensive headaches

Remove the fuel filter. note the stem that goes up inside filter. there is a small 'check disc valve', spring loaded, in top of that stem. [push down on it with small screwdriver, you'll see what I mean] Look up inside filter, you will see the small plastic 'rod' that is meant to open this valve. sometimes you have to make sure this valve is free, than push down hard on filter to engage, also be careful of proper lid gsk.

forgot to add, to see if fuel is flowing thru system, look for good stream from return line. this can tell id hpop or fuel prob. good luck---

Put a pressure gauge on the filter housing under the hood and see what kind of pressure you have. Should have 50 psi when running or close.

I use a 5 foot line and zipped tied it to my outside mirror till I figured my problem out.

I have removed the stem and everything looks good and functions right. I have used 2 different brand fuel filters thinking it may be the tab inside not pushing it down. I will test the fuel pressure tommorrow night hopefully. Thanks for all the help.

MYf350 99 model cab chassis rear tank has two screens in tank on pickup fuel sender that at 100000 miles plugs up ford say that the screen are non replaceable and you have to replace sending unit you don't you can remove screens and clean them with a tooth brush reinstall good for 100000 miles i done mine twice second time took them out pitch them put a big in line filter in front of ele.. fuel pump you might want look at them of course you have to remove tank on cab chassis not bad job

I have a 2002 f550 with the 7.3 and just like ben b. said my problem was the two screens in the fuel tank. This is a mixing chamber for the fuel. The inside top of my fuel tank was corroding. Reading fuel pressure was a great help in figuring this out.

What is your fuel level in your tank? I remember reading on some year models when the tank got about half empty the truck would lose power. A cracked in the pick line in the tank would be above the fuel level and cause this. As long as the tank was near full it ran fine.

Before you crank the engine-does the check engine come on?If the light doesn't come on,you have no power to the ecm. There is a sensor/heater in the filter(on a '99 any way)that can blow the ecm fuse(30 amp). If you unplug it,and replace the fuse it will run.Mark
